Photos app face recognition and naming people detected

Dear Sir/Madame,

since the photos app on windows 10 has a people tag sorting people based on the faces detected, it must have an option where the user can associate every face with a name so that it becomes easier to search and to share the photos of the people only if they are in them.

how is it possible to add names to the detected faces?

is it possible to share the photos based on their sort in the people tab?

Hi Patricia,

thanks a lot for your reply. I am very happy that finally someone from Microsoft gives attention to the problem. Here the data about my computers:

PC1:

Windows 10 1709.16299.309 Home 64 Bit

HP Pavilion Power Laptop 15-cb0xx, Core i7-7700HQ, 2.80 GHz, 16 GB RAM

Photos App 2018.18021.12420.0

PC2:

Windows 10 1709.16299.309 Home 64 Bit

Lenovo Miix 320 10ICR 2in1 Tablet, Atom x5-Z8350, 1.44 GHz, 4 GB RAM

Photos App 2018.18021.12420.0

PC3

Windows 10 1709  Pro 64 Bit

Desktop, Core 2 6600, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM

Photos App 2017.39101.16270.0 (until yesterday), 2018.18021.12420.0 since today.

Corrective Information regarding my post from March 19: With PC3 naming is neither possible as administrator nor as standard user 1.

According to your suggestion, for standard user 1 of PC1, I did a reset of the Photos app. But this was not a good idea:

  • It did not help. Before and after the reset, naming and merging of people was not possible. As can be seen in the attached screenshot, there is no field for names below each thumbnail.
  • Since the reset, a lot of pictures with faces are not recognized any more. Before the reset, the app had found 999 photos of my elder son and about 700 photos of my younger son. Now, after the reset, the app has found only 378 photos of the elder and 310 photos of the younger son. (The folders I have listed in the app's settings are the same, so the app should have access to the same photos as it had before the reset).

Hi Patricia,

my happiness from March 21 has disappeared. To use the Feedback Hub seems to be the standard Microsoft answer for any problem which is discussed in any MS forum. Why don't you communicate this to the MS-SW-developpers via the Feedback Hub? Perhaps they give more attention to the problem if it is communicated to them by a MS-colleague instead of a MS-customer. I have already communicated this problem via the Feedback Hub several weeks ago, but up to now there was no reaction at all.

I too tried resetting photos app to see if that would allow me to name people whose faces were recognized. No luck.  The reset also removed the timeline in the Collection view. I reset a total of 3 times.

Microsoft Photos 2018.18022.15110.0

Windows Insider Skip-Ahead 1803.17627.1000

sharing enabled between people/contacts and photos.

all pictures are in Onedrive...some locally some cloud only.

Hi RSchaff

it seems that one needs to be patient when resetting the app. On on PC/user combination I needed to reset the app twice to be successful, on the other PC/user combination it took me 3 resets. So I wouldn't be surprised if sometimes it needs also 4 or 5 resets. But the more severe problem is, when resetting the app, I think that also the face recognition algorithm is modified. The new algorithm seems to be significantly faster, but, unfortunately, also significantly less capable to recognize faces. After the reset, the app recognized only about 30-40% of the faces it recognized before the reset in the same folders.

As a follow-up, I was finally able to get all of the current photos app features working, but numerous resets never did it for me.

What solved it for me was to first uninstall the photos app in PowerShell using the following command.

***Be sure to run Powershell in admin mode***

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos | Remove-AppxPackage

I then reinstalled using

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos | Install-AppxPackage

On the first launch of Photos app after reinstall the newer features were missing, however when I launched the app for the second all of the features were present... timeline in Collection view, naming and merging in People view.

Hopefully this will be helpful to others having the same problem.

Reed

*edited to add run Powershell in admin mode

Hi

Yes successfully deleted.  Ran it in Powershell Admin mode.

I have now got the app from the store so we'll see if it comes with all the bells and whistles!

Thank you for your help.

I just wander why this feature of the photo app is so complicated to achieve.  I have seen this face recognition issue been discussed for a long time, but still not solution.  Are anyone having this feature working?

I do not bother anymore. It would have been handy to have, but...
