Windows 10 Photos App not working

Hello! So few days ago my Photos App started crashing. When I try to open a picture all I`m getting is black screen. After a while the app just closes. No error messages, nothing. I tried using the Windows apps troubleshooter, but that did not fixed the problem. I also tried to uninstall and install it again, but that did not work either. I can provide Event Viewer log if that's necessary.

Hi Lubomir,

There are several reasons why you are having issues with the Windows 10 Photos App. Normally, restoring your libraries to default will do the trick. You can try to do this by following the steps below:

  • Open File Explorer and click on the View tab.
  • Click on the Navigation pane and select Show libraries.
  • On the left pane, right click on Libraries and select Restore default libraries.

After following the steps, open your Photos app again and you should be able to see the images.

Should you have further questions, feel free to post them on this thread.

Hello, so I'm getting kind of frustrated already. I want to add few things so you stop avoiding the problem.

First (abit out of context) - I see alot of people with the same problem as mine. Some of them are all the way from 2015. That's like 2 years ago. How come Microsoft have not come out with a fix for a simple thing like Photos App for 2 years?

And second - I do not have problem with Microsoft Store. I do not have problem with my Calculator, Paint, Calendar, Camera, Maps, etc. I have a problem with Photos App and Photos App only. Stop redirecting me to a threads trying to fix Microsoft Store. I have tried the fixes to the Microsoft Store too, but none of them work (probably because they are for Microsoft Store specifically, I don't know).

So please give me a working fix to the problem, because I'm tired of using Paint to browse my pictures.

For further troubleshooting, we suggest that you restore your Photos app package. However, before proceeding, make sure that you back up all of your files. After creating a back up, you can follow the steps below:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type PowerShell and press Enter.
  • Type Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”} and press Enter.
  • Restart your computer.

After performing the steps, check if you will still have issues with the Photos app.

If you have questions, please let us know.

Do you have "Show my clould-only content from OneDrive" set to ON in Photos' Settings?  If so, try turning it off.  It's unlikely to help but is worth a shot.

Hi Jefferson,

I have performed a restoration on the Photos app package using the PowerShell command above. My Photos app is still not working.

Hi Mezziah,

Using the Powershell command is one of the effective ways we can resolve an issue. If it did not work for you, we need additional information in order to isolate the issue:

  • What is the exact issue that you're experiencing with the Photo App?
  • What other troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
  • When did your issue start?
  • Did you make any changes to your computer prior to the issue?

We look forward to hearing from you.

I open up the app, or a photo with the app, and it immediately closes.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the app using PowerShell.

I used the command above in this thread to try to fix it.

I have ensured Windows is up to date.

I have used the Recovery tool and reset my PC, using the option that saves my files.

 - Doing this fixed it, initially, and upon the next reboot the problem had returned.

I have since installed a different program, as the default Windows one clearly does not want to work.
