Windows 10 Shutdown - reboots or goes to red screen

Hi,

I'm having issues with my Win 10 64 Bit Professional Installation.

At 1st it worked OK then after a couple of starts I was finding that power > Shut Down was resulting in a reboot to the desktop.

I found that I could shut down correctly if on the reboot I shut down on the password page.

However, now when I shut down from the desktop, it reboots and goes straight to displaying a red rectangle in the middle of the screen that takes up around 95% of the screen space. From there it just hangs with the start button being the only option.

Can someone at Microsoft please issue a fix for this?

I have no power errors according to the power wizard and device manager shows no device issues.

Hi,

The issue might be occurring due to any corruption or software conflict.

Before following any troubleshooting, I suggest you check for Windows updates and install those updates and see if this helps.

Method 1 : Check for updates.

Run Windows Update. Open Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

An additional update will be downloaded and installed to your PC to fix the issue.

Method 2 : Power troubleshooter.

Let’s run the power troubleshooter and check.

1. Press Windows key + X and click on Control Panel.

2. Double click on troubleshooting and click on view all.

3. Click power and hit next to run the power troubleshooter.

4. Follow the on screen directions to complete the process. Once it is done, close all windows and restart the computer

If the issue persist try the below method.

Method 3 : Disable fast startup.

This feature uses a subset of hibernation, and turning off the fast-boot might help.

You can find this in control panel > power options > change what the power buttons do.

Let us know if this helps.

Keep us informed for further assistance.

1. No updates available - only drivers added are the ones Windows 10 added on installation

2. Power Troubleshooter - Reports no issues

3. Fastbooting - why would I want to disable this? If there's an issue with it patch it. I don't want a slow booting PC!

Hi Sachin,

Screen shot below. You can see the silver lower outer bezel of the monitor and there's a slim black bezel up the side approx 1cm wide, then basically there's a black border within the screen itself and then a red square.

Rebooting via the start button just brings you back to another red square. Occasionally, it will turn off with either a long hold, short press(!) or of course the power switch works. Next time you start, after it's been switched off, it boots normally.

Does it nearly every time on shut down, on the occasions it doesn't, it shuts down properly.

As I said before, I've added no drivers since migrating to W10.

I have no reported device issues, there are no reported power issues according to the power checker.

Hello,

Thank you for keeping us updated.

What is the make and model of your PC?

I suggest you to connect to the different monitor and check if the same issue persists.

As you are able to login to the system and this issue occurs when you reboot the system, I suggest you to update all the device drivers from the device manager and check if the same issue persists.

Refer: How to install and Update Device Drivers from the Device manager

Please post to us with more information and results to help you better.

HI,

The PC is self built and is fast and stable and has been stable for years. I've been building fast gaming spec pc's for the past 20 years.

Current PC Specs are as follows:

  • CPU - i7-3770K @ 3.5ghz (stock speed)
  • Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H Motherboard
  • 1 x Samsung 256GB 840 Pro SSD (System Drive)
  • 2 x Western Digital Black Hard Drives (non raid) for 2x separate storage
  • 1 x TP-Link Gigabit PCI Network Adapter
  • 1 x ASUS ROG Xonar Phoebus 7.1 PCI-E Soundcard
  • Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory
  • EVGA GeForce GTX 660TI SuperClocked 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • Asus MX279 Flat Panel Monitor

As for the monitor, there's nothing wrong with the monitor. The only time it ever displays a red square is when Windows 10 reboots itself on shut-down. No other time, ever and I reboot my computer probably more than 10 times a day and it's on for a lot of hours per day, every day, 7 days a week. So I'd have plenty of time to notice and monitor issue.

That suggests quite clearly that it is Windows that is feeding a red square image to the monitor, not the monitor that's failing to function.

I have the very latest drivers on the system all of which were on when it was Win 7 or were updated by the Win 10 installer.

Hello,

Thank you for keeping us updated.

I suggest you to check if the issue resolves in Safe Mode and try restarting the machine from the safe mode and check.

Safe mode loads only minimal set of drivers and applications which helps you try checking if the issue persists.

Hi Sachin,

It doesn't do it on a normal boot, ever.

It only ever does it when Windows shuts down and then reboots itself.
