Why does my snipping tool no longer bring up the pop up image to edit?

My Snip tool used to bring the image I captured in a pop up automatically, that I could edit when using the windows key & Ctrl S. It no longer does this? Is there a setting I need to change? I have to actually open the Snip Tool Menu to get this to work now. Not sure if some update was done by my IT people that changed this.

I had the same problem, utterly frustrating, and I found the answer myself...

Do this:

* START

* SETTINGS

* APPS

* INSTALLED APPS

* Click on the ... by Snipping Tool

* Click on Advanced Options

* Under BACKGROUND APPS PERMISSIONS

* Click Never

Job done :)

This worked for me and I was so happy! But then when I restarted my computer it reverted back to hiding the screenshot behind everything. I checked my settings and it was still set to Never, but it no longer works.

Does anyone have a fix for this yet, I have tried what this thread has already but nothing seems to work yet.

The Snipping tool has been broken ever since the introduction of screen recording.

It is a known issue and there's no fix for it, only MS can fix it by releasing a new app without the bug.

Screen recording in Snipping Tool begins rolling out to Windows Insiders

"There is also a known issue where the Snipping Tool app window does not restore when initiating a new snip from within the app."

The problem is that `ScreenClippingHost.exe` is getting locked up. This happens to me as well, and I don't have a good solution.

  1. Find and terminate the `ScreenClippingHost.exe` process.

  2. Press Windows - Shift - S to initiate the screen clipping overlay.

  3. Drag a box to snip something.

  4. Notice that you get no pop-up notification with the snip.

  5. Notice that `ScreenClippingHost.exe` continues to run rather than being terminated like it should.

  6. Notice that the screenshot is copied to your clipboard so you can paste it.

  7. Press Windows - Shift - S again.

  8. Notice that you no longer get the screen clipping overlay.

Killing the `ScreenClippingHost.exe` process will resolve the issue until you take another screenshot, then it will once again be stuck open and never terminate until killed or the computer is restarted.

It would seem that something is going wrong with the attempt to present a notification to the user and the app is getting into some kind of deadlocked or infinite wait state, which prevents new snipping from occurring.

This happens to me on Windows 11 Pro 22H2 22621.1105 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22638.1000.0

This is exactly what happens to me asl well, but I am running Windows 10 Pro 21H2 Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

It doesn't matter which edition, version or build number you are running, the culprit is the app itself.

Any version of the app with the recording option is flawed.
