[SOLVED] Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) - Audio Controller

I had my headphones in, watching a video without audio but suddenly no audio was coming through after I shut my pc to sleep mode with headphones in. I've done this before and nothing has happened like this. I panicked and restarted my pc, to fix the problem. It did not work. I tried troubleshooting when clicking on the audio button on the tab but it says nothing is wrong.

On Control Panel, against "Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller" is a yellow triangle and message when I click on it saying "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I tried to update but it says the best driver already installed.

How can I fix this please? I don't want to risk uninstalling this driver and would need some assistance. I'm worried i've broken it forever.

Edit: Accidentally hit restart again instead of shut down in panic and it fixed my problem! I don’t know how but i’m very thankful! Gonna throw out my old headphones though, don’t want this happening again lol!

Hi Louise. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

Getting the message when updating a driver that best driver is already installed means it's being attempted from the Device Manager which is not how critical drivers like Audio should be updated at all. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows drivers are rarely enough.

Update the Sound controller driver from the PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. While there compare to make sure you also have the latest BIOS, Chipset, Display, Network and all other drivers. If no newer then uninstall the Sound controller driver in Device Manager, restart PC to reinstall it.

If that doesn't help then try again but this time choose Upgrade Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick to try all previous drivers queued there.

If that doesn't help use the Intel Driver updater here to see if it finds a driver that works: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support...

If none of those help try these fixes for error 43:
