Missing photos after recent Windows Update

I had recently updated my PC on January 3, 2018. When I checked my photos in pictures, they're all gone. There's no previous versions. Is there anyway to fix this? There's no option that says to revert to a previous version.

It says:

Hi,

There are a number of possible causes to consider should you encounter missing files after an update on Windows 10. You might be signed into a temporary profile. It would be great if you can tell us more about your concern. Kindly answer the following questions:

  • Are you using a Microsoft account to sign into your Windows 10 PC? If not, are you signed into the correct local user account?
  • Are you getting any error messages?
  • Is the Pictures folder sync to OneDrive?
  • Do you have an external storage device connected to your Windows PC?
  • Can you provide us a screenshot of the issue? You can check this thread for the steps on how to include a screenshot in your post.

In the meantime, we recommend following the troubleshooting steps found in this support article. The support article has steps on how to find lost files after updating Windows 10.

We're looking forward to your response.

Hi,

We appreciate the update. There are some angles that we can consider when our files get lost specially that you've kept track of the locations on where it should be. That being said, one of the many possibilities would be a corrupted file that was detected by the system and was removed, or a file that was identified as an infected data that got quarantined. Mainly updating your Windows would be securing the integrity of your system and also fortify features that you might have troubles with. There are cases that some files get hidden. And if in case that all files are not hidden, we advise that you scan your computer for any possible infections on your computer.

As mentioned on the previous post, you can perform the troubleshooting in retrieving lost files on your system specially if your computer came from an upgrade. In the event that you are not able to retrieve your files, it would be best to have your concern consulted to the manufacturer of your computer to know what file retrieval program can they suggest as we don't have any specific program available yet. It is best advised though to prevent any file lost in the future to always back up any personal files to prevent the same predicament from happening.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to get back with us on this thread.

I just wanted to let you know that the same thing happened to me. I noticed it today and checked my updates. I have 2 updates that I downloaded on Jan 4th and 2 today, Jan 6th. My pictures were there a couple of days ago and now they've all disappeared. I lost thousands of pictures. I just wanted you to know that you're not alone.

I also had all of my pictures "disappear" after an update.  I'm still logged into the same local account on the computer.  If I open Windows Explorer and go to the C:Windows/Users/(username/pictures folder for my user account, the pictures are all there but they won't show up in the This PC/Pictures folder.

Now what do I do?

in my case this is right way C:\Users\Your - User - Name \Pictures - hope this help you.

Well, Microsoft has done it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   My pictures and files had also disappeared.  Ends up that the update tries to move your default storage to Microsoft Onedrive even though the user hasn't changed the default storage location.  The files were still in my C:/users/(useraccount)/pictures  documents, etc but wouldn't show up in the MY PC/pictures documents, etc.

I got tipped off when I started receiving notices that my Onedrive was full and I hadn't put any files in it.  I uninstalled Onedrive and all of my files are back where they belong.

I wish Microsoft would give us a choice instead of forcing this kind of change on a user and then forcing us to have to "fix" what wasn't broken.

Now, if I could just get the system to keep changing the default .pdf reader back to Edge all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!
