Is the hard-drive still (showing signs of) failure?

Have you replaced the hard-drive in the past 10 days?

Is MSE still installed or did you finally manage to uninstall it?

Have any updates successfully installed since last November?

Was KB947821 offered via Windows Update? If not, was there any particular reason you've been attempting to download the System Update Readiness tool?

What are the KB numbers of the other "hotfixes" which have failed to install?

Hard drive has been replaced.

MSE is still installed.

Only thing I find out in the update section is all the updates went through except.

KB947821 failed 7/30/2014 and failed again 7/29/2014 and again 7/18/2014

I get the notice to update windows and then I look to see what updated took place and is always the same hotfix failure but on a different date it failed.

And all hotfix  failures are the same as above.

Assuming Win7 64-bit with Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) installed...

Please answer each of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions in a correspondingly-numbered list in your very next reply - preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the computer?

1b. When (exact date, preferably) did you replace the HDD & reinstall Win7?

2a. Was Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) originally offered & installed via Windows Update or did you intentionallychoose to install it?

2b. In Windows Explorer [WinKey+E], navigate to & right-click on

        • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client <=this folder

Select Properties: What is the Created date displayed on the resulting General tab?

2c. What ANTIMALWARE CLIENT version is currently installed? To find out, open MSE & click on the downward-pointing arrow to the right of HELP then select ABOUT SECURITY ESSENTIALS.

2d. What ENGINE & DEFINITIONS versions?

3. What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE (if any), was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed MSE?

4a. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?

4b. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

5a. Is KB2962872 or KB2963952; KB2971850, KB2973201, KB2961072 and/or KB2972280 listed inInstalled Updates (not Update History)? [1]

5b. Is KB947821 being offered via Windows Update or have you been attempting to install it manually  for some reason?

5c. What is the KB number(s) of the other "hotfix" which failed to install "a day ago?"

6. Assuming Java is installed => Is Java Version 7 Update 55 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp [2]

7. Is Adobe Flash Player v14.0.145 (or higher) installed? TEST HERE USING INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY! => http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

8a. When (exact date) was Windows Internet Explorer 11 installed according to Installed Updates?

8b. What Update Version & KB number is displayed in the second line of text in IE11's Help | About [Alt+H+A] tab; e.g., Update Version: 11.0.54 (KB1231231) ?

8c. Is Firefox, Chrome or any other alternate browser installed?

9. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner's Registry Cleaner component)?
