Error message states hard drive is failing on my Windows 7 64 bit computer

I have a windows 7 64 bit and the harddrive is sending error messages that the drive is failing.

I know I need to back up all of the info on the hard drive

and I realy Do not know what all I need to do.

Can some one tell me if I back up the hard drive is there a way to copy the hard drive on to something so that once my hard drive stops working I can re install all my info back on to my computer when I get a new hard drive put back in.

I want to be able to reinstall windows 7 but if my drive fails I know I cannot use my pc unless I reinstall windows 7 so was thinking if I could copy windows 7 from my pc on to a DVD or flash drive would this work.

Thankyou

When get error reports such as this one then you might have missed the chance to save your installation. Normally one would do this to allow for a full recovery:

  1. Connect a USB hard disk with sufficient capacity.
  2. Burn a Windows Repair CD via the Control Panel / Backup and Restore.
  3. Create an image via the same place. Store it on the external disk.
  4. Replace the failing disk.
  5. Boot the machine with the Repair CD.
  6. Restore the image.
  7. Use the USB hard disk for your regular backups.

If you lack experience in these areas then you need to get the machine serviced.

Thankyou for the information,

I will follow the information and see what happens,

But what size USB do I need, was thinking there was a certain size USB that I sould use or does it matter?

and when you say connect a usb do you mean a external?

I suppose you do mean that because I'am not a expert at this type of thing and I looked at walmart and saw a few USB in the store but I did not know what size to plug in to my pc or what to do.

Thankyou for the info because I know the hard drive will stop and is no telling when it will happen.

Hello Regina,

We apologize for delayed response.

I would like to update you that creating a system image disc will be a good option if you computer is working absolutely fine and in future if anything bad happens to your computer in future, you can us the image recovery disc but as in your case you are already getting issues with hard disc. I would suggest you to back up data on external hard disc and try to re-install the OS on the same hard drive if repaired or on new hard drive.

You may refer to the following article to  Back up your files.
