Grey Horizontal Lines on Screen

I've been having an issue where there are multiple grey lines appearing on my monitor. I tried to fix this by updating all of my graphics drivers, restarting my computer, and even changing the Display Port cable, to no avail. The lines are less noticeable in browser windows. I discovered these lines about a month ago. I am running Windows 10 and I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti graphics card. Here is a screenshot of what they look like. Please help me!
Hi Cabi. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator. If you will work with me I will be here to help until the issue is resolved.

I don't see any grey lines in your screenshot, just the red sunset bleeding through the semi-transparency set on your Start Menu.

1) Does this happen on another monitor? Try another monitor. If it doesn't happen then reset the monitor in it's settings buttons.

2) Try all steps here for the Display driver:

Update the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...
or the Nvidia Update utility here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e...
or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

3)Try resetting the theme by setting a new Theme from Settings > Personalization > Themes or from the many spectacular free Themes you can download from the Store to that control panel to choose from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collectio...

If you don't want the theme used to reset this, you can then personalize with your own background slideshow or picture in Settings > Personalization > Backgrounds but most personal pictures are not as high resolution as the Theme packages which are the highest possible and some of the most expensive scenic pictures ever taken.

To get color back on the task bar, start menu and window frames after Version 1903 turned the Light theme dull grey follow this guide:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

To get the spectacular scenic backgrounds back on the Lock screen when the PC first starts up, go into Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and set the drop down menu to Windows Spotlight.

If you want the Fun Facts you can hover the mouse over on the Lock Screen or click to go to info pages about the scenes, change dropdown temporarilty to Picture, then tick the box to Get fun facts.... and change it back to Windows Spotlight.

More about personalizing by customizing appearance here:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

I have tried everything you suggested except #1 because I do not have a second monitor. I think this is an issue with the monitor because the screenshot did not show the lines. The monitor might have been physically damaged. I will try to get it fixed or buy a new one when the virus finally quiets down.

Have you gone through the settings to find the Reset. Most monitors have one. This may resolve it, or further adjusting the settings. Also, does it do the same when plugged into another PC? This will confirm it's the monitor.

I reset my monitor and nothing changed. I plugged it into a different PC and the lines were still there.

So that confirms the problem is with the monitor? How old? ViewSonic monitors don't have the best track record for lasting like a Samsung, Acer or HP.

Also if you're only using VGA have you tried HDMI if available? This can matter.

This monitor is actually relatively new, it's an Acer monitor. It was probably damaged when I tried to hang something in my room and the desk that the monitor was on collapsed. I have tried HDMI before but this monitor is incompatible with it.

If it's within a year of purchase you still have a hardware repair and replacement warranty. I'd contact their Support as it may even be a known issue.

Even if it's somewhat outside the warranty period there may be some leeway as they will often let you estimate the purchase date.

Keep me posted on your progress as I will be here to help until the case is resolved.
