Explorer crashes when I click on any file

When I left or right click on a Windows Explorer crashes. It happens on any type of file. The event log shows this information for every occurrence:

I can open files from within other programs; e.g., execute a video file using the file browser in Notebook.  But all files including .txt files crash Explorer if I just left or right click on them using Windows Explorer.

It began happening about 3 hours ago according to the logs, but I don't recall doing anything special, such as installing programs or changing settings.  I've disabled all non-Microsoft Context Menu handlers.  I'm running up-to-date Kaspersky Internet Security 2013.

Do you have components of Autodesk Inventor 2013 installed?

 

Thank you for providing with more information including event logs. Let's analyze and identify the cause of the issue.

 

 

Method 1:

Step 1: I would suggest you to boot the device to safe mode and check.

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

Step 2: Clean boot

Place the computer in clean boot and check for the issue.

Note: Once you are done with clean boot, please follow the section ‘How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot’ under ‘more information’ in the article to put your computer back to normal startup.


Method 2:

You may run SFC scan to check if there is any system corrupted files.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Well, fortunately (in the short run), after shutting down overnight the problem disappeared. Unfortunately (in the long run), that doesn't tell me why it happened in the first place, which would be nice to know in case it happens again.  Any suggestions for further tracking what happened?

I do not have Autodesk installed.

The problem came back.

I booted into safe mode and the problem remains: when I single-click (right- or left-click) on a file (any file type) in explorer, explorer crashes.    But if I open Notepad (or another program) and use the file open explorer, the problem does not exist: I can single (and double-click/execute) on files.  It only happens when I'm in explorer on its own (including when I run it as administrator).

Hi,

This issue normally occurs when there is any problem with the dll (Dynamic Link Library) files. It is better to perform SFC scan (System File Checker) which is mentioned as Method 2 in my previous post.

You may let us know the status so that we could help you further.

I ran sfc /scannow and come up with 2 files that couldn't be repaired.

Ran DISM, which repaired them.  Re-ran Sfc and it now returns no errors.

But still cannot click on files, so the problem remains.

What exactly are you referring when you say 'cannot click on files'?

 

It looks like SFC scan has repaired few files. However, I would suggest you to follow the suggestion provided by 'Andre.Ziegler (MCC)' in the Technet discussion forum.

When I hover the mouse pointer over a file and press the left button: that's what I mean.  Just simply left clicking on a file to highlight it crashes explorer. The same happens if I use the keyboard: as soon as I press an arrow key to highlight a file, explorer crashes.

I've already done everything in the Ziegler post before I posted here.  It deals with right-clicking in particular.  My problem is much broader than that: I can't click on anything, left- or right-click.

Since you have tried everything I would highly recommend to capture a user-mode dump of the explorer.exe crash to get more information on the crash and see if a third party module is causing the crash.

You can configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first.

If you copy and paste the following in Notepad and save as a .reg file, then right-click the .reg file and select "Merge" to add to the registry, a .dmp file at the time explorer.exe crashes should be created in the C:\CrashDumps folder:

I went through the steps but no folder or .dmp file was created.

However, maybe I've described this wrong.  To be clear: it's the file explorer that disappears, not that the system crashes.  I may have given you the wrong description to begin with.  The system doesn't crash: file explorer just goes away.
