All folders are now Read Only Windows 10

After a recent update my folders on all devices are now Read Only. I change the setting and save. But the attribute is Read Only.

I searched to find out I am not the only one with this problem but I am not able to correct it.

The directions to fix the problem I am finding difficult to follow and I have failed repeatedly to the point I don't know what I have done or not done.

I would be very appreciative if someone could give me clear, concise directions.

This non-problem refuses to go away.

It's explained in somewhat technical language by Microsoft here: You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders ... That article was written for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, but it still applies in Windows 10. Here's an excerpt:

"Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer.

The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box."

How are you determining your folders are Read-only?

It's not  a status indicator, it's a switch.

What error messages are you receiving?

First how I became aware. When exiting MS Money I write a backup to another device. I have the parameters set to keep the last three backup files. The process writes a new file and deletes the oldest.

When I exited MS Money there was a vague error message explaining why it failed. I knew there was enough disk space, that the file name was valid, etc. One other option was Read Only. After checking I saw the Read Only checkbox was checked. So I unchecked it. I tried again to backup my MS Money file. The Read Only switch was again set.

I know I did not set the switch.

Thanks for the link. However, I am not sure what to do. As you can see there isn't a Change Permissions option. Plus it appears that there shouldn't be a problem with permissions. I set up this computer, and am the only user.

Any suggestions about how to proceed?

You didn't "see it checked", you saw a black square. Every folder on every windows system in the world will desplay a black square in that checkbox when the PRoperties dialog is displayed. If you create a new folder & view its Properties, you'll see that black square. It just means "When you click OK or Apply, the ReadOnly status of the files within will be unchanged."

Have you check the state of Controlled folder access? If it's on, try turning it off.

Hi BobLanger1,

If that is the case, follow these steps.

1. Right-click [Specific folder you want to set permission] and select properties.
2. Click the "Security" tab.
3. On Security tab, click on "edit...".
4. Click on "Add..."
5. Type in "Everyone" then click on "Check Names" and click "OK".
6. Check the allow checkbox of

Full control
Modify
Read & execute
List folder contents
Read
Write

7. Click Apply and OK. [Windows Security will pop up] just click on "Yes".

8. Reset the PC & try.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for your help. The problem does seem to be resolved though I have no idea why. All my folders have the square black mark in the box. I was not able to repeat the error using the same program and settings.

One thing that is different. The error occurred on OneDrive. I have moved the folder and files to an external hard drive. Before the problem this past weekend I have been using the mapped OneDrive as a destination for specific backups for months without a problem.

All my OneDrive files have that black square and I have no problems with updating files in OneDrive.  Obviously the black square doesn't mean that I can't write to files.  So your problem was something else.
