Outlook IMAP login fail w Thunderbird

I'm trying to set up Thunderbird to sync with a hotmail account using IMAP protocols, but am unable to log in from T'bird. When I set up the T'bird server settings I followed the manual config instructions as per T'bird help. Also at Outlook help.

When restarting Thunderbird, I get a pop up that says "Login to server imap-mail.outlook.com failed" then prompts to Enter New Password. When I do so it says "Mail Server PW Required for *** Email address is removed for privacy ***@imap-mail.outlook.com ". Is that even an address? When I put in the known good PW (works at Outlook.com) it goes back to the login fail msg, lather-rinse-repeat.
Any clue what I'm doing wrong here?

It's an XP laptop I'm trying to set up for my dad who had a stroke and is in a facility with no public terminals. He's never used his own PC before, using machines at work or the library, so he's just used html page for email, never a client, and has maybe 100 folders (!!) he keeps mail in, and needs to sync to his laptop (hence the IMAP rather than POP3).

Thanks for any help anybody can offer!

So, I just tried again using Marie_V 's instructions that I found through the FAQ here, and when I clicked done I got "Configuration could not be verified --is the user name or password wrong?"
So I went to Outlook.com, tested, name/pw worked fine.

Now what?

I'm confused. Obviously. When I wrote this, it had blank@hotmail@outlook, so I asked if that was a valid address format, what with the 2x @-signs. When I just checked this post without login it had the blank@hotmail part missing, thus making my question a non-question.
I hope nobody else can see my address, which is why I didn't put my address. Seriously, there's somebody out there who has the address of blank.at.domain? sorry if I posted anybody's addy. Just trying to explain my problem.
Still cannot log in to outlook via Thunderbird.

Hi,

Though some time have passed after the post above, I have almost same problem.

The difference is all windows 7 email client program including outlook 2016 and thunderbird cannot login to my outlook.com IMAP account. I've used correct password.

Of course, web access has no problem. I think this is definitely the IMAP problem on my account.

Please, give me a "You have a private reply to this message link" for me to fill my information.

Thanks,

Taehoon

I have the same issue. Started two days ago. What did you change Microsoft to cause this problem for so many people? The Thunderbird forum is jumping with people with this issue. At least tell us you aware of this and are working on it!
