How to edit contact details in Messenger contact

I have a number of old Windows Messenger contacts which have old phone numbers and address details. Following removal of Messenger functionality from Windows and from Hotmail, I cannot find any way to tidy this up - now have my combined people details showing all the old stuff as well as the new stuff.

Please please please give us a way to edit this. Even if it is just to remove the contact details (and leave the Microsoft account) from this from outlook.com People tab!

Been mentioned previously but the thread was closed even though NO SOLUTION seems to have been made available to anyone.

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Community. I’m glad to assist you regarding your concern about editing your contacts.

Firstly, we would like to inform you that you cannot edit Messenger contacts on the People page. You can’t edit them because the information on the contacts was added by the users themselves. However, you can add more information to your contacts. But before editing them you need to select only the Messenger contacts so there will be no confusion as to which contacts will you edit. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Log in with your Microsoft account to the People page.
  2. On the People page, click the gear icon on the upper right corner of the page then leave a check for Messenger under Filter all contacts and remove the check on the others.
  3. Select a contact on the left pane, then click Edit on the upper part of the page. You will see a notification that says You can't change Messenger contact info, but you can add details that will appear on this contact's card.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Add more information to the contacts and click Save.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Ok. I think I have worked out what the problem is. My son's profile (which is the one I have been having the problem with) seems to have had an "Other Address" added to it - which if he goes in through Edit My Profile is not available to change. This might have been something done some time ago, or editing indirectly through Outlook in the past. How can he get rid of this now incorrect information?

Hi TheAndyMac,

Since this issue has something to do on your son's account. You can advise him to edit those information depending where he add those details. It is possible that he added that information on his "Profile" or in "People" page in Outlook.com. You can click that link so you can give him an idea where to go when changing other information on his account.

If you have further questions, please let us know.

Thank you.

Unfortunately you  cannot add or remove the "Other Address" details through your profile these days, or at least between us, we have not been able to find out how to do so. You can add/edit/delete a work address but NOT the "Other Address". This, I believe, is the problem.

Hi Andy,

We appreciate your efforts in bringing the issue to our attention.

I understand that you wish to expand the editing of your contact details.

Please be informed that you can add or remove social networks, but social-network contact info can't be edited or deleted in Outlook.com. For further, more detailed information on this, please refer to this link. You may also find the article below helpful.

Should you have other questions, clarifications or any other concerns, please update this thread and we will be happy to further assist you.

No, I want my son to be able to edit these details - the information for "Other Address" was added to HIS profile at some time and now HE can't get rid of it as there does not seem to be any way to get at it to edit... and deleting his profile and starting again is simply not an option.

Hi TheAndyMac,

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts about the look and features of Outlook.com and for your suggestions of new features you think are important to add to the product.

You can submit a formal feedback using this link.

Note: Contact info from social networks can't be edited or deleted. For info on adding or removing social networks in your Outlook.com account, see Add friends from Facebook and other social networks.

Finally think I have found the issue. Not obvious at all, but in case anyone else hits this problem, what I found was:

The additional information appears to be help within "my" copy of the contact details for the messenger account - not in the original profile (tried adding to another account and extra info did not show)

Deleting this messenger contact and an additional outlook contact in outlook.com (not sure about the second, but seems to create this automatically with a messenger link somehow) and then requesting to be connected again (which seems to automatically pick up the previous acceptance) seems to have fixed the problem.

For all of you who want to edit your outdated Messenger profile information, you cannot do that from the Outlook.com People app., as both Messenger and Skype are treated as "external" social networks by Outlook.com.

Instead, log into https://profile.live.com/ where you will be able to edit your Skype and/or Messenger profiles on the Web.

Many people just assume that their Outlook.com (Hotmail) and Messenger contacts are one and the same because they were never presented as separate services in the past.  Therefore, it's surprising that Microsoft Outlook.com forum moderators seem unaware of how to help people with their contact issues involving Messenger.  Microsoft needs to do a little more cross-product education for its support staff apparently.

+1

This thread was especially painful when TheAndyMac was directed to the black hole of submitting formal feedback. Glad that TheAndyMac was able to find the solution on her own, and kudos for posting it back to this thread, despite the lack of help from the moderators.
