Why Do I have a Microsoft Account and an Outlook Account? Do I need Both?

I am becoming very confused about all of these Microsoft accounts. We have One Drive Accounts, Office 365 Accounts, Outlook Accounts.  My case is that I have a Microsoft account.  I don't remember when or why I made an outlook account.  These are both on-line accounts.  Questions:

1.) Can I log into my Outlook account with my Microsoft Account?  If I can, why do I need my Outlook account?

2.) Can I log into my Microsoft Account with my Outlook account? Or does Outlook.com always have to have an Outlook account?

3.) If I change passwords for my Microsoft Account, does that carry over to Outlook.com as well, I have done that.

I have a local account on my Windows 10 Desktop and a Microsoft account on my Windows 8 laptop.

Answer

Hi Jack,

A Microsoft account has different services such as OneDrive, Outlook.com, People, Calendar and various other services. This not necessarily mean that you have separate accounts for all. If you have a Microsoft account with an @outlook.com or @Hotmail.com, etc. addresses then these addresses have access to Outlook.com and other services as well.

You do not need multiple addresses to use these services one Microsoft account is enough to use Outlook.com, OneDrive etc. Therefore, to answer your questions.

1. Yes, you can login to https://outlook.live.com/ through your Microsoft Account since outlook.com is one of the services provided for your Microsoft account.

2. We use the term Outlook.com account when you are accessing your email account to make it convenient for customer to understand. This Outlook.com account is an email address and password of your Microsoft Account. If you have a Microsoft Account, then you can use email address and password for this Microsoft account to login to Outlook.com, OneDrive, Calendar etc.

3. Yes, any changes made on your Microsoft account will reflect on all its services, therefore if you change the password of your Microsoft Account then you will have to use this new password to login to all the other services associated with this Microsoft Account.

Do reply if you have further related queries.
