Security Alert from Microsoft Account Team - Scam?

Hi,

My wife is getting a screen that comes up each time she tries to sign in to her Hotmail Account. It says it is from the Microsoft Account Team and has :Security Alert" in large blue text. It tells her that "they think that someone else might have accessed the Microsoft account. Then shows part of her email address. When this happens, we require you to verify your identity with a security challenge and then change your password the next time you sign in".

There is a large blue button with "Recover Account" on it.

After staying on the page for a while a text box pops up on the screen advising that her password is incorrect.

Is this a scam or is it genuine?

Please help.

Hello Callum,

Please inform your wife of the following...

1. Without seeing the email & link{s} provided... it is difficult for us to tell.

FYI

Microsoft usually has a green shield on the sender's name.

and you might see a lock in the URL / address line

These indicate that the email is coming from Microsoft /  legit sender.

*** Please check your email to see if the green shield is there. ***

2. Is your wife  accessing / monitoring her   recent activity   to see what is going on with the account ?

What is the Recent activity page?

The “Recent activity” page shows info about the activity in your Microsoft account, within the last 30 days.

This includes any time that you (or someone else)  signed in to your account, whether you used a web browser, your phone, an email app, a third-party app, or another method.
