Outlook (Office 365 and Desktop) rule not working

I have the following rule

To delete some of the more prolific spammers output, but it doesn't do anything. Most of the emails end up in my junk folder.

Hello Tim Irons,

Good day!

Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community, we are glad to assist.

First of all, we apologize for the trouble and inconvenience caused to your work!

Based on your description regarding the issue with Outlook rules not functioning properly on classic Outlook for Windows,

Outlook rules are only being applied to inbox messages.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken,

but it appears that your rule isn't running because spam emails are being directed straight to the junk email folder.

Note: Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Best Regards,

So, junk mail filtering is incompatible with rules?

If so, why isn't there a warning?

Hi Tim Irons,

Microsoft Use Rule consent depend on Inbox folder as below picture it’s called Inbox rule

There is no need to warn for this matter because the rule configuration isn’t feasible to select folder to apply the rule on but it depends on certain criteria.

You can check this guide for rule main concept and applicability.

Use inbox rules

I hope the above information will be helpful. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other concern.

That looks like the Windows Mail program not the Office Desktop app (who thought using the same name for three different apps was a good idea).

Rules are enabled, but not working.

Hi Tim Irons,

Kndly note that Use Inbox Rule Is the man featuresfor Outlook Rule regardless which Outlook nterface are using ( Classic Outlook, New Outlook or Outlookon the web )

rule applcable only for Inbox messages and not feasbale for others folder .

that why your outlook rule won't effect for junk folder becasue why you run the rule it's checked the criteria for inbox messages.

So to reiterate my earlier question.

Is it correct that rules apply after the junk filter, and only to the emails remaining in the inbox?

Hi Tim Irons,

As a work around for you situation, you can Ask your IT Admin to manage Antispam Policy to block these list of supplied emails domains by following these steps.

The recommended way is to create an anti-spam policy in MS Defender and add the email addresses to the block list.

1. In the Microsoft Defender portal at https://security.microsoft.com, go to Email & Collaboration > Policies & Rules > Threat policies > Anti-spam in the Policies section. Or, to go directly to the Anti-spam policies page, use https://security.microsoft.com/antispam.

2. On the Anti-spam policies page, select

Create Create policy and then select Inbound from the dropdown list to start the new anti-spam policy wizard.

3. In the details, you can then add Block entries for domains and email addresses in the Create block entries for domains and email addresses.

The main reason to use the blocked senders list or the blocked domains list in anti-spam policies: block entries in the Tenant Allow/Block List also prevent users in the organization from sending email to those email addresses or domains.

For more detailed info, please refer to this doc: Configure spam filter policies | Microsoft Learn
