Is there any difference between installing OneNote from office installer and from Apple's app store?

When new version of Office applications were released, you can download them both in Office 365 portal and Apple’s app store. They are the same. But the release time is different. And you may get different version of apps in different place.

Updates are on the same schedule for installed by Office OneNote and Apple Store OneDrive. Updates typically are distributed to everyone approximately within any given week. Different servers may get them asynchronously, so there's no precise time frame.

OneDrive installed as part of Office is eligible for Insider update options. OneNote installed by the Apple App Store is not.

I think when you say OneDrive, you mean OneNote?

And what exactly do you mean by insider options? Could you provide some examples.

You can get the same package from Office portal and Apple's app store. Both of them are the latest version of Office. You can find the update history by this article: Update history for Office 2016 for Mac.
