It depends on the type of student you are.  They consider Office 365 Home Premium a student edition and that it is already "discounted".

If you are a post secondary student you can get the Office 365 University discount. It is US$80 one-time payment for up to 4 years while you are still in school

I (rohn) now have confirmation from another poster that they were able to install 2013 University on both a PC and Mac to “use up” their 2 allowed installations at the same time. It also allows activation on up to 2 iPhones

o Q: What are the steps for student verification?

o A: There are just four easy steps. If you’re not signed in to your Windows Live ID account, the site will first direct you to the Windows Live ID sign-in page. Next you’ll visit the Academic Verification page where you’ll take the following steps:

1. Verify or select your country from the drop down menu.
2. Select your preferred verification method (3 choices)
   a. If you select “Get verified through my school”, you’ll be taken to the school search page where you can follow the steps to search for and select your school to complete verification.
   b. If you select “I have a Verification Code”, you’ll be required to enter the activation code that was given to you by either your school’s administrator or Microsoft.
   c. If you select “I have an ISIC card”, you’ll be required to enter your student identification card number.
3. Click “Continue”.

I chatted with Microsoft Technical Support earlier, and she confirms that installation of Office 365 University will indeed install the Office 365 Home Premium in the computer. The product will show that it’s Office 365 Home Premium, which is true in my case.

Only in my Microsoft Account page that it shows my subscription is Office 365 University.

Yes, I used a student e-mail ID. My Microsoft Account page now shows I have 4 years of Office 365 University subscription. And you are right, when I activate my Office 365 University from my account, it replaces the Office 365 Home Premium subscription (mine only had 5 days or trial days left anyway, so no issue with that).

The software giant on Tuesday announced a new program called Student Advantage, whereby students worldwide can sign up for subscriptions to Office 365 ProPlus through their institutions at no cost to themselves.

The only stipulation is that the schools must have already licensed either Office 365 ProPlus or Office Professional Plus for their entire workforces, including faculty and staff.

Get Office 365 ProPlus for students at no extra cost when you purchase Office for faculty and staff

When you license Office 365 ProPlus or Office Professional Plus institution-wide for all your faculty/staff, your students get access to Office 365 ProPlus at no extra cost. Starts Dec. 1, 2013.

How does a school sign up to get Office 365 ProPlus for students at no additional cost?

Schools can sign up through their existing Enrollment for Education Solutions, Open Value Subscription-Education Solutions, or school contract.

Do students have to be on the Office 365 A2 plan before they can use O365 Pro Plus at no additional cost?

No. Students do not have to be on the Office 365 A2 plan. However, in order to have full productivity capabilities, it is recommended that institutions deploy both Office 365 A2 and O365 Pro Plus for their students.

My institution is already paying for students to use Office 365 ProPlus. When can we move to offering it to students at no additional cost?

Your institution can order and deploy Office 365 ProPlus to students starting December 1, 2013, provided that it meets all the conditions required for this Enrollment for Education Solutions, Open Value Subscription-Education Solutions, or school contract benefit. At the anniversary or renewal date for your contract, please contact your Volume Licensing reseller to address additional questions related to the software provided to students.

My institution just paid for students to use Office 365 ProPlus. Will we get credit back?

There is no credit for the invoice already paid. For additional support, please contact your Volume Licensing specialist.

What happens when a student graduates?

When students graduate, their Office 365 subscription through the institution ends. They can enroll in other consumer or commercial offers.

2012 06 27- Free Office 365 for education bundle now available

MS Rolls Out Office 365 For Education

http://www.informationweek.com/news/software/productivity_apps/240002794

June 27, 2012. Office 365 for Education gives students free access to online versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and allows them to connect to each other and to their instructors through cloud-based editions of Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync.

Using your school-provided email address at http://office.com/students or http://office.com/teachers  is the quickest, easiest way to get started using free Office tools for your school work.

There could be a number of reasons why you are unable to sign up:

  1. We are not able to verify the email domain you are using
  2. Technical issues caused by various existing user directory configurations
  3. Your school may have turned off the ability for students and teachers to sign up themselves

If the message you receive after a failed attempt is one of the first two – keep checking every week. If your school is restricting student/teacher sign ups, or you don’t have an email address provided to you from your school, you should check with your school to get information on how to proceed.

If you have additional questions you can post them in the Office Applications forum.
