Windows Update Error : 800706BA Windows 7

I have always been able to download and install Windows updates until yesterday (11/12/14). I have an HP G72 laptop. It is a few years old and received little to no use until October of last year. I have not installed any new software on it in the last year. I am using ESET NOD32 4.2.67.10 as my anti virus. I have no other malware, adware, firewalls, etc, installed and never have. The laptop is running Win 7 x64. I researched the error and ran the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab).

I can successfully check for updates and I am prompted to install 12 new updates (65.6MB worth). These updates are the following...

KB3003057 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB2978120 Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Wikndows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems

KB2991963 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB2992611 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB2993958 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3002885 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3003743 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3005607 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3006226 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3010788 Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB2952664 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

KB3008627 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems

I've tried DLing 1 or more, in different orders, after reboots and full power-downs. Each time I receive the same error. I've run System Restore and restored back to a point a few weeks ago, my earliest restore point. I am still unable to download and install these 12 updates.

The Update Diagnostic Tool tells me that:

Windows Update error 0x80070057(2014-11-13-T-04_30_23P) - FIXED

Service registration is missing or corrupt - FIXED

Problems installing recent updates - NOT FIXED

I am looking for a logical solution that can be applied with relative ease. I do not own a Win 7 install disk and am not willing to factory restore (or reformat) this laptop at this time.

Thank you!

Same exact issue - Have gone through all 4 steps and I am still receiving the same errors. Looks like the issue is in on Microsoft's side. Hopefully a fix comes soon.

Hello and thank you very much for the detailed reply.

Firstly, to answer your questions: The Update Diagnostic Tool I ran was the same one you suggested in your first method. I've run it more than once and seem to receive different results each time. The 2nd last run of it did not fix the same things it has in the past. For example, Service registration is missing or corrupt was not fixed, while Problems installing recent updates was fixed. My last run (during clean boot) fixed nothing.

Secondly, I have not added any new hardware or software. I did burn an audio CD a few days prior to being prompted to install new updates. I had no burning software installed and went ahead and activated Windows Media Player to make the burn. I had not previously used it, so perhaps this installed new components?

I followed your instructions for method 2 and ran Windows Update as described. I am still unable to install the updates. On occasion the updates with get to 11% before crashing. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but felt I should include this information.

As per method 3, I installed and ran the Microsoft Fix It. The application completed and then I searched for updates and attempted to install them once again. The same 12 updates were found. However, I was once again unable to download the updates.

In clean boot, method 4, I searched for updates and was unable to install them. I also ran the Diagnostic Tool again and it was unable to fix anything at all.

What other suggestions do you have?

Thank you!

Hello Henry,

Thank you for quick response and we appreciate your efforts which you have tried to resolve the issue.

Since you are not able to install the Windows updates I would suggest some more troubleshooting methods here to resolve the issue.

Method 1: Reset Windows Update components

If issue still persists try to run the fixit provided in the following article.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Note : Method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If the issue still persists follow method 2

Method 2: Download the System Update Readiness tool

Refer the link below and download the package for versions of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7 x64-based (64-bit)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

Hope this helps. If issue still persists, post back with current status of your computer and result of proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you again for the reply. I ran the Fix It tool to reset Windows Update components. After which I searched for updates and tried to install them. I was unable to do so. The update process reached 11% before crashing to the same error.

I downloaded the System Update Readiness tool from method 2 and installed it. After it successfully installed the hotfix, I attempted to install Windows updates. I am now showing 13 updates. I tried just after installing the hotfix and again after a system reboot. Windows updates continue to fail and can not be installed. I am still getting the same error as in my first post.

I appreciate your help and suggestions. Is there anything else I can try?

11/21/14 -- EDIT

I have just connected to a different network other than my home network and Windows says I have limited connectivity. I am able to browse the Web just fine, and am not sure why it is telling me this. I clicked on the link within the Network Sharing Center to diagnose the problem and I am getting the same error I get with Windows update (0x800706BA). The error window reports that the path of the problem is C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\networking. The source is Engine.

Does this help to diagnose my issue at all?

Henry I have been tracking your posts since Nov 10 when I started getting the same exact issues. However, I noticed the "limited access" at the very start of my problem. Eleven days in and I can't update windows past 35% download.

I've tried a lot of things to fix this. I wish I had more than a handful of restore points, I'm kind of missing XP right now for that reason. I'm not sure what I am going to do but after the Holidays I may just end up buying Win7 and formatting the HDD. It doesn't seem like I am going to be able to get updates working again based on suggestions I've read and tried so far.

Hi Henry,

Thanks for your update on the issue.

I understand your situation after having tried so many steps. However, the third party firewalls from the security software usually block the connection that hinder the Windows Updates to get installed efficiently.

So, I would suggest you to disable the security software (ESET) installed in your system temporarily, and check if it helps.

Disable antivirus software

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/disable-antivirus-software#1TC=windows-7

Disclaimer: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

The above step is worth a try after you come back from holidays and let us know the results for further assistance.

Thank you

I have had the same build of ESET Nod32 installed for every Windows update and have never had an issue. It came as no surprise to me when disabling it made no difference. I can still not install the most recent updates.

Hi Henry,

Unfortunately, there is no other option left for us to repair your Windows. I understand it's pretty upsetting. I really appreciate your efforts in resolving the issue.

I would suggest you to perform an In-place upgrade of the operating system using the Windows 7 Operating system disc.

You can follow the steps mentioned in the following article to perform In-Place Upgrade to fix all the windows corruptions.

How to perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008R2.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099/en-us

Important: I highly recommend backing up all of your important files and folders onto an external storage device before attempting any type of OS repair or upgrade.

Refer the link to back up your files

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Back-up-your-files

Try these steps, should help.
