Windows 10: Iinternet keeps disconnecting!

I have Window 10 and all of a sudden the internet just disconnects. WIFI is still active, but just no internet.  I tried rebooting my computer and the internet gateway to no avail. Then I told it to forget my network and tried to re connect to it.  It wouldn't even show ANY available networks and usually there are lists upon lists since I live in a condo.  I finally gave up and hired someone to come look at it.  He saw the same thing I did and then all of sudden the list of networks reappeared! He didn't DO ANYTHING!

A day later and it disconnected AGAIN.  This time the reboot of laptop and internet gateway worked.  If a solution cant be found to this and this is the future of Microsoft I'll have to start thinking about a MAC. I see this issue all over the web but it seems Microsoft cannot fix the issue or it isn't a priority. What's up with this?  These days internet is a necessity.

Hi Franceen. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

I'll give you everything that works to fix the internet so that at least something will work. Even if you've already tried a step please try or check it again in sequence. If you need any assistance I'll be standing by here to help:

Update your network adapter drivers from the PC maker's Support Downloads web page using the full model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

If you have the latest network driver then try on it's Driver tab also to Roll Back, or Uninstall and then restart PC to reinstall the driver. Try also all older drivers from Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick list working backwards.

Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters, select Wifi adapter, then Power Management tab, clear the check box to "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save energy." Then on the Advanced tab disable any energy-saving options.

If this was caused by Windows Updates then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Installed Updates, then uninstall them from the link there, and hide with the Hide Updates tool explained here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninsta...

You can also use System Restore to get before the problem began, then check for Updates with the Hide Update tool and hide them.

If this was caused by Version update then you can roll it back in Settings>Update & Security>Recovery and then hide it until it matures using the Hide Updates Tool.

For Wifi won't connect after Version 1903:
https://windows101tricks.com/fix-wifi-keeps-dis...
https://www.techrepublic.com/article/wi-fi-and-...
https://pureinfotech.com/fix-wifi-problems-wind...

Enable IPv6 in the network adapter settings:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/90033-enabl...

Run the fixit from https://support.microsoft.com/help/929852 (Re-enable IPv6 on all nontunnel interfaces) and reboot.

Right click the network icon in System Tray at bottom right end of task bar to Troubleshoot Problems.

Try all of these steps: https://support.microsoft.com/tr-tr/help/10741/...
https://www.kapilarya.com/how-to-reset-network-...

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > WIfi > Manage Known Networks, highlight and remove the network having problems, restart PC to see if it shows up again.

Try plugging in by ethernet cable to the router to compare, then plug the ethernet cable into the modem (if separate) to see if this might be an issue with the router.

Try powering off modem, router and PC and then restarting in that order with 1 minute in between each. You may need to reset your router or even optimize it following these steps:
https://www.lifewire.com/resetting-a-home-netwo...
https://www.pcmag.com/article/258865/how-to-set...
Your router manual is always available from the manufacturer's website for your exact model.

You also are entitled to Support from your internet provider to get online on all devices. This is always included in the monthly bill. If your router is less than a year old they will also Support getting it connected and optimized.

Another option is you could replace the wireless adapter with an inexpensive USB nano adapter like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/OURLiNK-600Mbps-Wireless...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

first off i forgot a key piece of information in y original query—It’s not a internet gateway issue or internet provider issue since the internet works fine on my TVs and my phone and tablet. Just not on my laptop.

As far as your quick response, although perhaps complete, it is overwhelming. I’m not a super user of computers and most of this is greek to me. Have no idea how i would determine if it was caused by a Windows update or version update,  and I’m not going to go changing network adapter settings or run some fixit microsoft progrm without understanding what i am doing, etc. Sorry, but until Windows 10, I have really never had problems with the performance of my laptop and i didn’t need a computer degree to use windows. Adding salt to the wound, I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10 due to windows not supporting 7 any longer. Another reason to consider a MAC.

From all the queries on the web it appears to be a Windows problem and im wondering when Microsoft will find a fix.

I offered to help you as much as you need, all you have to do is ask. I was trying to be thorough.

If you want to complain to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback. But Microsoft will not even see it here because this is a tech forums where we are mostly volunteers trying to help solve your problems.

We regularly have reports of Windows Updates or Version Updates causing problems so I included those steps.

Can you check if you have the latest wireless adapter driver from the PC maker's Support downloads webpage. If you need help just let me know the make/model of the PC - you can find this by typing System Information in the Search box on task bar, looking for System model.

Greg,

i apologize for my criticisms and they probably do belong elsewhere. My bad.  My frustration and the size and number of fixes to try got the better of me. Just a suggestion for you. It might be better to send a few easy to do things that might fix the problem and then if they don’t work maybe send progressively more advanced ideas. For the general user your first response was just overwhelming and intimidating. I will wait and see if this continues to be a problem and then try some of your fixes. Thanks for uour time and effort.

Francine

No worries, Francine.

Can I help you find the latest Wifi driver from your PC maker's Support Downloads web page for your model. Look on the PC's sticker for the full model number or Dell Service tag. Or type System Information in Search box, in System Information look for System model. I will give you the latest wifi driver to install. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is how to keep the latest manufacturer's drivers current. Windows Update drivers are never enough.

Franceen, since it's Dell we need the Service Tag which will be on a sticker on the PC, 6-7 characters, put it in here to get the latest drivers:
https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/prod...

Then under Category choose Network, download and install the latest Wireless driver.

If that doesn't clear up the problem, go into the Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button, choose Network Adapters, then Wireless adapter, on Driver tab, choose Update Driver, then Automatic. Does it find a newer driver?

If not let me know the Make and Model, Date and Version of the Wifi adapter and driver from the driver tab in Device Manager.

Does the same problem happen if you plug in an ethernet cable?

i just upgraded my computer to Win10 a few days ago, and every day I noticed my gaming server that i run would be offline.

no wireless networks would be there. I would click on the 'Troubleshoot Issues' button and it would suddenly work again - always the 'Reset Network Adapter' was the action the troubleshooter did automatically.

So, i googled it, and I think the symptoms fit this fix suggested above:

'Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters, select Wifi adapter, then Power Management tab, clear the check box to "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save energy." Then on the Advanced tab disable any energy-saving options.

I think default Win10 is excited to save a few miliwatts of power every hour so they turn off the wireless for you, just to be nice.

grrr..

anyway, try that one.
