Error 0x80070057 installing Internet Explorer 11 and other updates installing repeatedly

Original Title - Windows Updates fail to install

The following updates are failing to successfully install:

KB2872339

KB2882822

Or, rather, they say that they installed successfully in the Windows update history, but are offered again after checking for more updates.  They attempt to install repeatedly every day.  In addition, Internet Explorer 10 is being offered as an optional update even though it is already installed (currently running version 10.0.7), and fails if I try to install it again with error code 9C48.  It is not listed under Programs and Features, so I can't uninstall it.  Internet Explorer 11 also fails to install, with the same error code.

The Windows Update Troubleshooter reports:

Problems found

Windows Update error 0x80070057(2014-01-09-T-11_40_51A)       Not fixed

Problems installing recent update      Not fixed

The System File Checker reports no problems.

Running "dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth" results in "Error: 87 The checkhealth option is not recognized in this context." (/restorehealth returns a similar error).

I installed the System Update Readiness Tool hotfix (KB947821).  It took about an hour and apparently installed successfully.

But the problem persists.  Any suggestions?

Answer

Hi DaveMagrath-Smith,

The Checksur tool detected 4 corrupt files and has lsied that those files have been fixed.

Do the updates show up as installed successfully in Windwos update history or they show up as failed with an error code?

I would have you run these commands in elevated command prompt-

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

pause

For Internet Explorer 11 not getting installed correctly I would suggest you to refer to the below link and check if the steps help -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2872074/en-us

Note: Make sure you turn on the firewall as well as the antivirus as soon as possible so as to avoid getting infected by virus (computer).

Thanks.
