Can't log in using my Skype name and password

I used to be able to log in using my Skype name and password, but on the latest version of Skype it's asking for my Microsoft account.

I don't know anything about any Microsoft account, I've always used Skype (for 7-8 years) with only my Skype name and password.

When I open the older version of Skype I can still use my Skype name and password. When from the old version of skype I go to manage account it opens https://secure.skype.com/portal/account/settings where it lists my Skype name and says that the Microsoft account is linked. However I don't know anything about that Microsoft account, I don't know the email or password.

Is it possible that Microsoft account was created automatically? If so, what are the credentials for it?

I have created this (the one I'm posting from) Microsoft account using the email connected to my Skype account, but it's not the same Skype account when I log in using this account.

Hi rtl57,

All Skype accounts were transitioned to basic Microsoft accounts last October 2016, although users with legacy accounts (Skype Name-created accounts) still need to fully update their accounts to enjoy the benefits of a full Microsoft account. This might be the reason why you were being asked to sign in with a Microsoft account as your Skype account is not yet fully migrated.

You will only have a Microsoft account that is created automatically if you will sign in on any Microsoft products using your email address. Therefore, the credentials for this is your email and its password. You are correct that your Microsoft account is not the same with your Skype account, thus they are two separate accounts.

To proceed linking your Skype account to a Microsoft account, please sign in to login.live.com then use your Skype name and password. Kindly follow the steps that will prompt on your screen. Once you successfully migrate your Skype account, you should be able to sign in to Skype 8 app. Let me know if you still have questions.
