Windows Update fails with error 0x80096001

When I try to run Windows Update or update Microsoft Security Essentials I get the error code 0x80096001.

I have already tried MicrosoftFixit50202.exe and MicrosoftFixit50528.exe and neither worked.

I tried running MGADiag.exe and I noticed this part here:

I tried running "/sfc scannow" and in the cmd window it says it found some problems but it was unable to fix them, however when I look at the CBS.log it doesn't say anything about the problem files:

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

OPTION A: You can begin a free MSE Support incident directly by opening your browser to https://support.microsoftsecurityessentials.com/. Select the appropriate option (e.g., Virus and spyware definitions update failed; I think my computer is infected) and then select the appropriate available support option offered for your region.  Tip: Do NOT select the Forum support option.

OPTION B: Microsoft sponsors no-charge, online (third-party!) support for such issues: http://supportservices.microsoft.com/support/services/virus_malware_removal
