Backup Fails since Windows 10, version 1809 update

Since the update, my backup will not complete. I checked the Event view and it says.

"The backup was not successful. The error is: The media is write protected. (0x80070013)."

How do I resolve this?

are you using windows backup?
do you also have file history turned on?

windows backup is being deprecated and Microsoft recommend using third party software for backups.
the free version of Macrium reflect seems popular. (I like it)
and can be downloaded from https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

have a look at the user guide for instructions.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am using windows back up and file history is turned on.

Does this mean File history is going away too?

I am not certain about file history although microsoft have hinted at it going as well in favour only of the timeline (personally I hope file history is remaining). I have seen other posts in the community confirming that file history is going although I have not read a definitive article from Microsoft, specifically about file history, .

there is an issue with using windows backup and file history, microsoft have said that if you schedule a backup you cannot then turn on file history.
what they haven't said is that if you have file history turned on and THEN try to use windows backup you will get all sorts of errors.

I like file history, it is so easy to replace an earlier copy of a file.

Thank you! I like file history too. It saved me from a big mess yesterday when I was able to go back and grab a previous version of a spreedsheet. It seems that with almost every update they remove things I use and replace them with things I don't use. lol

at the moment I am using file history and macrium reflect (free version) all seems to be working well.
I am not a fan of the timeline, there are a lot of 'features' that I struggle to think why ANYONE would use, but then I am getting old and grumpy.

My backup just failed as well. I use the Windows 7 Backup.

I updated to 1809 on 02/03 October. There are no outstanding updates.

I am using the same external hard drive as I have used in the past.

The Windows 7 backup fails after "System image of Recovery Environment was successfully created" Backup was up to 98% complete.

Like Paul-063 the error is 0x80070013 "The Media is write Protected"

Any advice ?

Is it my harddisk or is it 1809 ?.

It's 1809. I took ownership, and tried removing Read- only attribute. Looked like it was turning R off, but it didn't.

Win7 backup has been deprecated for some time. Looks like it's a goner... unless it was unintentional.

Since File History doesn't work if there are 2 disks, I've tried using Macrium backup. It made an enormous file (810 GB for a 2 TB HD [43% used] + 480 GB [33% used] SSD, and took 3 hours... but individual files are extractable from the disk image, and it does differentials & incrementals.

I use Macrium and the image and file and folder backups (you have to pay for the latter) to my external hard drive worked fine after installing Windows 1809.

The Windows 1809 (Windows 7) image and files backup using the same drive failed with error code 0x80070013.

So, yes, by all means go to Macrium.

But what motivated Microsoft to stop the Windows 7 backup from working? This seems to me not to be a case of no longer supplying fixes but one of supplying a problem instead! I thought Americans believed in if it ain't broke don't fix it. Well, it wasn't broke.

Prior to Windows 1809 I had no problem with scheduled image and file backup as well as running file history. Looks like Microsoft goofed.

I don't think it's your hard disk because my backup using Macrium worked fine under Windows 1809. So it must be Windows 1809.
