USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter: Not enough bandwidth? No 3.3V?

Hi,

I want to run a HP Reverb Windows Mixed Reality headset on my Surface Book 2 (15").

The SB only has one USB-C port, no native HDMI/DP/mDP ports.

So, I am limited to the use of the "USB-C to DisplayPort" adapter.

But the adapter does not seem to offer either enough bandwidth or voltage.

What DisplayPort spec is the adapter?

I read somewhere that the USB-C on the SB only supports 1 or 2 DisplayPort lanes - is that true? (It would limit the bandwidth.)

Can bandwidth-demanding devices like the HP Reverb or Acer OJO run via USB-C adapters from the Surface Book?

Are other adapters better than the original Microsoft adapter?

Side note:

Other VR headsets work (Samsung Odyssey) via "USB-C to HDMI" adapter.

Cross-post in the WMR forum.

Hello HSA-JoT,

Thank you for reaching out Surface Community. Can you tell us more what happen when you connect your HP Reverb Windows Mixed Reality headset via USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter and what type of cable are you using? Is it passive or active? Please make sure as well that your device is completely up to date by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Check for updates.

Please keep us posted.

Regards,

KarenJune_F

Hi,

sure, here are more details:

The Reverb comes with a cable that splits into a DisplayPort 1.3 and a USB 3 (Type A) connector. Both need to be connected.

  • For the USB Type A part that is no problem, it connects to one of the SB USB Type A ports.
  • The DisplayPort is not available on the SB. So, as written above, I use the original Microsoft Surface USB-C to Display Port adapter here to connect to the HP Reverb Display Port cable.

When I connect the cables as mentioned above, the Windows Mixed Reality portal opens.

In the Windows Device Manager the Reverb is correctly identified and installed (no red/yellow error symbol).

The Windows Mixed Reality Portal tells me, I should check the cable connection to the Reverb.

The Reverb stays black / inactive.

On other machines with native DP/mDP this HP Reverb device works instantly with no problems.

Hi,

We deeply apologized for the long wait. As I understand you are trying to connect it to the USB-C connected with a Display port adapter.

Have you tried to use other adapter instead?

So far, HP Reverb Windows Mixed Reality headset is supported by the Surface Book 2. You may check this link below and for additional tips that you can try.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/windows-mixed-reality-minimum-pc-hardware-compatibility-guidelines

Otherwise, since this is a mixed reality, you can contact Windows Support at Microsoft Hotline at 1-800-642-7676. You just need to follow the IVR System to be routed to the right department. They are the one who is catering this kind of case.

I hope this helps. Please keep us posted.

Regards,

Edd

Yes, I have tried other adapters.

Unfortunately no luck.

I found out that the original Microsoft USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter is only specified for DisplayPort 1.2.

The HP Reverb needs DP 1.3, due to its very high bandwidth needs.

Does Microsoft offer a DP 1.3 adapter? More precisely:

Does Microsoft offer a USB-C to DisplayPort 1.3 compatible adapter?

And in addition to that:

Does the USB-C port of the SurfaceBook 2 offer enough bandwidth for DisplayPort 1.3?

As I wrote before, older WMR headsets work with my SurfaceBook (i.e. the Samsung Odyssey). But they don't have the same bandwidth demands as the HP Reverb.

Just a suggestion,

Have you tried manually selecting the Nvidia GPU for the program you are trying to run? I don't have experience with VR but I can say that the auto select for the GPU seldom works as it should.

Hi, yes, I tried that.

It does work with the Samsung Odyssey, but it does not work with the HP Reverb.

Here is an adapter that would support what you need.

https://www.cablematters.com/pc-1038-122-usb-c-to-displayport-adapter-usb-c-to-dp-adapter-with-8k-resolution-and-hdr-support.aspx

I don't know if the Surface Book 2 provides the necessary output though. I suppose it's worth a try. You might want to check with HP or Cable Matters tech support. I see on the HP site that they recommend a 1080 GPU and the 1060 in the Surface is already running below spec.

Is anyone able to confirm whether or not the 8k adapter suggested above works with the SB2?
