Windows Update can't update on build 14316 - Error 0x80240020

Whenever I try to update my computer from build 14316 to a later build (in this case, 14361), it detects the update and seems to download regularly until the "Preparing to install updates" step reaches 100%, at which the "Insider Preview Build 14361" text disappears and Windows Update appears to do nothing.

I have left my computer on while this step is happening for over 8 hours and nothing happens once the update process reaches "Preparing to install updates 100%".

Event Viewer shows that WindowsUpdateClient fails with the error code 0x80240020. Whenever I run the Windows Update Troubleshooter, the update simply redownloads and the error occurs again.

If it makes any difference, I recently switched from a Microsoft account to a Local account, although Insider Builds are still linked with my Microsoft account.

Thanks in advance!

Answer

Error code 0x80240020 means the update is getting corrupted.

Try going to build 14366 using an ISO rather than update.

Make sure you have enough space on C: drive (recommended minimum 16GB for 32-bit or 20GB for 64-bit)

Download the ISO - Windows 10 Insider Preview - Build 14366 & open with explorer and run setup.exe

This is similar to update as it is run in windows and will keep all your files and settings.
