4K UHD Blu-ray problems - picture stuttering

Hello,

I recently purchased a new XBox One S and am having problems playing the 4K UHD Blu-Ray version of The Revenant. The picture is frequently stuttering. dropping frames, etc. The picture will seem to freeze for a half-second, then skip ahead a half second or so while the audio remains constant. This starts within the first five minutes and happens throughout the film. The disc is brand new, just purchased this past weekend.

Please note that I tried playing the regular Blu-ray version that came with the purchase of the Revenant, with no problems. I also watched three other Blu-Ray movies, with no issues with stuttering or dropped frames. The only movie I'm having issues with is the 4K UHD Blu-Ray version of the Revenant. I don't own any other 4K UHD Blu-Rays to test.

Also, the version of the XBox Blu-Ray app is the most recent version - I just deleted the app and redownloaded it yesterday. My Vizio TV is showing that it is receiving a 4K HDR signal from the XBox when the Revenant is playing.

Here are some other things I have tried:

-Two different HDMI cables (including the one provided by XBox) going from the XBox to the Vizio

-A hard reset

-Disabling and reenabling many settings, including 4K and 24Hz on the XBox

-Switching the XBox resolution to output a 1080p signal instead of 4K

-Turning off the BD Live capability on the XBox

-Making the XBox go offline (and unplugging the network cable) and playing the movie

The issue still persists regardless of what I try.

If someone could please advise how to solve this problem, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Hey there EmbodiedAlarm33,

Does this issue happen with other UHD movies as well? Or just with The Revenant? It's possible the disc is defective and the console's Blu-ray player is having a problem reading the UHD disc. You might need to exchange the UHD disc with the retailer if other discs are working properly.

Hey there PoeticLeopard83 and RedzUntouchable,

Are you both also using a Vizio Model TV? If so, what is the Model Number of the TV you're using and have you checked to see if there is any Firmware updates on the TV, as well as are you using the HDMI cable that came with the Xbox One S console?

Thanks!

Does your TV have a "motion-smoothing" feature?

Sometimes, disabling this feature (in your TV options menu) may help in cases like this, as you're preventing the TV from post-processing the image, which could possibly be the cause of stuttering.

Thanks for the info, as Internet Expert suggested, if your TV has a motion-smoothing feature, sometimes disabling this can help. Check and see if this is an option for you. If not, be sure to check and try this troubleshooting guide which can also help with quality issues on a 4K TV. Troubleshooting 4K and HDR on Xbox One S

Here is an update. I have a Vizio P55-C1, with the latest firmware. I have already tried all of the steps in the troubleshooting page, which are very basic things (try a different HDMI cable).

I exchanged the original 4K UHD Revenant disc for a brand new one, and still the playback was glitchy, stuttery. This was with all motion smoothing features turned off.

As an experiment, I tried disabling the HDR setting on the XBox. The disc played flawlessly, with no stuttering. I then reenabled HDR again, and played the same part of the movie, and it was stuttering.

As far as I can tell, we can eliminate these things:

The Blu-Ray player

The disc

Have there been any other reports of issues with Blu-Ray playback with the HDR setting enabled?

Of course, disabling HDR defeats the whole purpose of purchasing 4K HDR Blu-Rays.
