Windows 7: Trying to copy a user profile. The "Copy To" button is always grayed out and the user folder always shows a padlock, no matter how many times I reboot into a different account.

No matter how many user accounts I create, when I log into any one of them the other user folders (c:\users\xxxxx) always show a padlock. My computer was pre-installed and I want to copy the initial user profile to a new user profile.

Hi Monty999,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows forum.

First check if your computer is connected to a Domain or a Workgroup ?

The padlock indicates that the account is protected with the User name and the password .

Click Start >> Right Click on Computer >> Click Properties and check if your computer is on Workgroup or Domain.

If it is on Domain contact : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w7itpro,windowsvistaitpro,windowsxpitpro/

Else, If it is on Workgroup :

Click Start >> click "Network and Sharing center" >> click "Advanced Sharing center" and Turn off password protection sharing and save changes.

After saving the changes, copy files to other user folders and check.
