Unable to use computer and get message Windows is not genuine Your computer might be running a counterfeit copy of Windows. 0x80070005.

Original title: Windows is not genuine Your computer might be running a counterfeit copy of Windows. 0x80070005.

I am experiencing the following: Windows is not genuine Your computer might be running a counterfeit copy of Windows. 0x80070005.  The computer desktop background is black, and I receive the following error message on the bottom right corner of the screen:  “Windows 7 Build 7600  This copy of Windows is not genuine”.  Once this error occurred, I lost access to the Internet (I am on another computer) on the affected computer only.  I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit.  What can I do to fix this without having access to the Internet?  I tried starting my computer in Safe Mode and Networking, but that didn't work either.  It says that I am not connected, and that Windows did not detect any networking hardware.

I also tried to do a system restore, but it just hangs there when it gets to the point of "please wait while initializing ...".  None of the maintenance and repair functions are working.

I did a virus scan using McAfee, but none were detected.
I would appreciate any help.  Thank you!
Trish

Hi Trish,

Welcome to Microsoft Community!

You get message in the computer as Windows is not genuine Your computer might be running a counterfeit copy of Windows. 0x80070005.

I could imagine the inconvenience you experience when you are unable to use the computer.

The situation may arise as a result of applying a Plug and Play Group Policy object.

To overcome this, I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below:

Method 1: Disable the Plug and Play Policy

a. Determine the source of the policy. To do this, follow these steps:

i. On the client experiencing the Activation error, run the Resultant Set of Policywizard by clicking Start, Run and entering rsop.msc as the command.

ii. Visit the following location:

Computer Configuration / Policies / Windows Settings /Security Settings / System Services /

If the Plug and Play service is configured through a Group Policy setting, you see it here with settings other thanNot Defined. Additionally, you can see which Group Policy is applying this setting.

b. Disable the Group Policy settings and force the Group Policy to be reapplied:

i. Edit the Group Policy that is identified in Step 1 and change the setting to “Not Defined.” Or, follow the section below to add the required permissions for the Network Service account.
ii. Force the Group Policy setting to reapply:
gpupdate /force (a restart of the client is sometimes required)

Method 2: Edit the permissions of the Group Policy

a.       Open the Group Policy that is identified in Method A, Step 1 above, and open the corresponding Group Policy setting.

b.      Click the Edit Security button, and then click the Advanced button.

c.       In the Advanced Security Settings for Plug and Play window click Add and then add the SERVICE account. Then, click OK

d.      Select the following permissions in the Allow section and then clicklock:

Query template
Query status
Enumerate dependents
Interrogate
User-defined control
Read permissions

Note: The Previous rights are the minimum required permissions.

e. Run gpupdate /force after you apply the previous permissions to the Group Policy setting.

f. Verify that the appropriate permissions are applied with the following command:

sc sdshow plugplay

The following are the rights applied to the Plug and Play service in SDDL:

D:(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;SY)
(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)
(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)
(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;SU)
S:(AU;FA;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;WD)

(A;;CC LC SW LO CR RC ;;;SU is an Access Control Entry (ACE) that allows the following rights to "SU" (SDDL_SERVICE – Service logon user)

A: Access Allowed
CC: Create Child
LC: List Children
SW: Self Write
LO: List Object
CR: Control Access
RC: Read Control
SU: Service Logon User

Note: If there are no GPO's in place, then another activity may have changed the default registry permissions. To work around this issue, perform the following steps:

          i.            On the computer that is out of tolerance, start Registry Editor.

ii.            Right-click the registry key HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20, and selectPermissions...

iii.            If the NETWORK SERVICE is not present, click Add...

iv.            In Enter the object names to select type Network Service and then click Check Names and OK.

         v.            Select the NETWORK SERVICE and Grant Full Control and Read permissions.

        vi.            Restart the computer.

vii.            After the restart, the system may require activation. Complete the activation.

Hope this helps. If the issue persists, let us know and we would be glad to help you.

I tried this, but when I put in rsop.msc , it says that it does not exist.  So, I can't even get to the rest of the steps.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
 Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
  - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Since this problem started, I do not have access to the Internet.  I can't get to the link, and I would have no way of copying and pasting the results in my thread since I would have to go to another computer.  The computer is not recognizing any writeable devices (tried flash drive, SD card, cell phone, CD, DVD), so even if I would save the MGADiag tool to a disk, run it on the affected computer, and generate the report, I would have no way of pulling the report off of that computer.

You can download the tool on any computer, and transfer it to the affected one using a USB stick.

You can then save the output in Notepad onto the USB stick, and upload it on the functional computer.

Non-genuine problems alone do not prevent internet connection - you must have other problems as well.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Hi there,

i am experiencing exactly the same thing on my laptop, despite having genuine windows 7! I am just about to run the CHKDSK scan but wanted to ask if I will lose any of my files? Would I also be able to send you the scan results please? I have no idea what's going on with it!

thanks so much!

This is a rather ancient thread - you should start a new thread of your own detailing your own problems, and include an MGADiag report.
