Cumulative updates - September 2020

My Action Center won't open today after Windows installed:

1. September 8, 2020-KB4576478 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 2004

2. September 8, 2020—KB4571756 (OS Build 19041.508)

Is anyone else having this issue or knows how to fix it? I've tried Chkdsk, Sfc, restarting Windows Explorer, and disabling and reenabling Action Center. I can't rename the Usrclass.dat file because it is in use.

I updated my windows 10 to 2004. I cannot login to my computer after updating. Windows 10 keeps signing me out immediately after logging in. 

How can I take action against this problem?

ps: I tried to login in safe mode. I can login there successfully. 

I'm having a similar issue. My Start Button (and everything that works off it, which includes the action centre) stops working after this is installed. I've tested and it's definitely KB4571756 because uninstalling it fixes the problem. It also caused ASUS Armory Crate to fall over (error in cdp.dll - says the file is incompatible with windows); I hoped uninstalling that would solve the issue, but it didn't.

For the moment I've paused updates for 7 days.

P.S. I've checked and the Service Stack Update installed with no problems.

Service Stack updates are automatically applied before the cumulative updates. There is nothing you have to do to install them.

It is unfortunate that these updates are causing so many issues. It seems now we are spending more time trying to protect our systems from updates than using our systems. Backing up to an external hard drive is the best thing you can do. Having a cloud backup is good as well. Having at least two copies of your files is wise. A good backup program that you run at least prior to the updates being released (normally on the 2nd Tuesday of the month) is now almost essential. Macrium Reflect is a highly recommended backup program which will allow you to backup your entire system. They have a "free" version.

I had a similar problem yesterday after updating Windows 10 20H2 to Build 19042.508. (Release Preview Channel)

message reads: Group Policy Object is having problems and I press Windows 10 Sign Out Button and I try to Login back to Desktop Successfully after update.

Luckily it was only once.

THANK YOU  JohnD for the reply.  I was very confused as to getting the Service Stack updates ahead of time.  I thought that needed to be done first as Sumit's links seemed to imply that (to me.)   I appreciate the clarification.

Y'know, this "update" makes me feel as though my machine was hit with 10 Virus', 5 Worms and at least one Trojan Horse!   I'm not sure which I'd rather deal with :D

Yes, my external hard drive is a great back up, but it being hardware, that can always fail too.  DVDs, thumb drives, etc. not real convenient when updating documents that need to be saved multiple times, but due to this recent update debacle*,  I'm trying to do the best and what I can.  I will look into the Macrium Reflect you recommend.   I can't really justify buying expensive cloud services that are over $100 or more per year--not for the type of user I am.  I'm sure it would be worth it for many though.

I believe that this "new and improved" update has turned many machines into expensive paper weights!! I wish we could postpone getting the forced update until MS can fix the issues, but I doubt that will happen.  "If if ain't broke, don't fix it" and "KISS" come to mind when thinking about it.

*Debacle: a great disaster, a complete failure: fiasco:  Windows Update!  That about sums it up. 

I did the latest update and now my password won’t work to sign in the computer. I’ve had the laptop for 3+ years and it’s never been a problem.
