Motorola surfboard modem SB5101 won't connect after loading Win 7 OS

I had Win XP 32 bit and have now upgraded to Win 7 64 bit (I have a 64 bit processer)  Now my computer won't connect to my modem - Motorola Surfboard SB5101 even though a combatibility check here said it should be OK.  When I try to connect I get this error:  Connection failed #651, modem or other connecting device reporting error.

My service provider could not help and said my signal to connect is fine.  I loaded new Vista 64 drivers for my modem as that was the only drivers for a 64 bit OS that I could find, hoping that would help.  No luck there either.  Any suggestions?

Answer
I assume that you're connecting the modem to your computer with a USB cable.  If your modem has an Ethernet output, use it instead.  The Ethernet connection doesn't require a driver program and is more reliable than the USB connection.
