Delete key vs Backspace key in Word for iPad

I am enjoying Word for iPad.  However, I can't seem to get the delete key to work in a forward-going direction.  It only does a backward deletion.  I have had a problem with this on my Apple BT keyboard, as well as a Microsoft BT keyboard I tried at the Microsoft store this weekend.  Any hints on deleting the next character (as opposed to the prior one)?

Hi,

I need more details to assist you with the issue:

Does the issue occurs only with Word or with other Office apps as well?

Try to connect a different keyboard to iPad and check how it works.

If you’re able to work with different keyboard, then it would be best if you can get in touch with keyboard manufacturer support.

For further queries, reply and we would be happy to assist.

Thank you.

The soft keyboard does not allow forward delete, you can press and hold to bring up the magnifier and move it to where you would like to delete the text but this is not ideal.

Using a hardware keyboard holding down fn + delete will perform a forward delete.

Thanks,

Fergal

Fergal and Deepra,

Thanks.  I did try other bluetooth keyboards with no luck.  I suspect that Fergal is correct re the need for a hardware keyboard; however, I'm not sure one exists for the latest generation of iPads. Many other iPad editors do allow forward delete from a wireless keyboard. I wonder when Microsoft will beable to add this to Word.

Hi Fergal,

I'm using an Apple BlueTooth keyboard with Word for iPad and I can't get the Delete key to turn into a Forward Delete with any of the modifier keys (fn, ctrl, alt, cmd, Shift).

On a related note...  Do you know if there is an external keyboard key combination that will insert a Line Break?  (i.e. not a full carriage return that creatures a new paragraph, but just a line break that stays in the same paragraph).

Thanks for your help.

Alan.

Having the same problem.

The fn key + backspace does delete a character to the right of the cursor in all of my other iPad apps except Word.

Is there any chance this could be sorted in an update? I love using Word on my iPad with my Apple Wireless Keyboard but not being able to delete characters to the right of the cursor is a bit of a pain.

Thanks

Fergal,

I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard together with an iPad 2 and iOS version 8.1.1.

Typing text in the Apple note app, in Safari or any other iPad App, the key combination fn-backspace results in a forward delete. Only in MS Word for iOS it doesn't work. Even in MS Excel for iOS this combination works!

Is it possible to reconfigure MS Word for solving this problem, is it only available with the paid version of Office 365, or is it a bug in MS Word version 1.3?

Steffen.

Shift+Enter doesn't work?

Hi Steffen,

Can you try using fn + Shift + Delete?

On my Bluetooth keyboard this will accomplish the forward delete.

Also, this is not a premium feature so it does not require the paid version.

Thanks,

Fergal

Can you try using fn + Shift + Delete?

Hi Fergal,

no, fn+shift+delete = Delete as well.

I'm surprised that fn+Delete works perfectly well with MS Excel (like in Safari, Note...). From the MS point of view: is it perhaps only a bug in MS Word to be solved in the next version?

Regards

Steffen.

Hi Steffen,

I see the issue now on the Apple Wireless keyboard, I'll forward the issue to the product team.

Thanks,
