Far from intuitive (Word 2013)

I'm not one to go to forums to voice my opinion. I find that most people who complain on forums are just looking for something to complain about.

But when i'm trying to use a word processor to do something as simple as type a document with irregular spacing and i get forced into some autospacing that is not easily fixed that is complete and utter *swear word*. I use technology all the time and this is a far from easy issue to fix. No simple resolution even came from searching your own help menu or searching google.

You think your taking one step forward with office when all I've noticed is two steps back with every new addition. It's one thing to make options more readily available but keep your friggin grubby paws of my paper, off of what i am typing, stop trying to make live easier by literally ruining all motivation i had to write because the formating of my document is now trashed half way through.

And yes, I've looked in the "autoformatting" menu of word, the problem is with forcing me to double space after every time i hit enter when i think i clearly can hand hitting enter twice for the situations that require it. And yes, spacing is set to single spaced.  This is a direct issue with the system trying to "learn" my behavior and assuming just because i double space after some things it think's i want to double space after everything.

If you don't want any paragraph spacing (= spacing added as you press Enter to create a new paragraph), set the Spacing After and Spacing Before to zero.

You can change the spacing defaults in the Manage Styles dialog box: From within a new, blank document, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to display the Styles pane. Click the Manage Styles icon. Change Spacing Before and After on the Set Defaults tab. Select "New documents based on this template" and click OK. If/when you are prompted to save the Normal template, choose to do so.

Note, however, that best practice in Word is to press Enter once to create a new paragraph. See http://shaunakelly.com/word/concepts/rulesfortyping.html.

Be aware that you are not talking to Microsoft here. Almost everyone in this forum is a volunteer, just another user trying to help. Even the Support Engineers are not Microsoft employees; they are employed by an outsourcing firm engaged by Microsoft. It is extremely rare for any Microsoft employee who is actually involved in the design of the Word application to participate in this forum.

As for the spacing, in Word 2007 and 2010, the default paragraph spacing is 1.15 lines, and the default Spacing After is 10 points; apparently in Word 2013 this has been reduced to 1.08 lines and 8 points. If you don't like this spacing, there are several ways to change it.

  1. At the most basic, you can apply the No Spacing style (the second pane in the default Quick Styles gallery). This will apply to the current paragraph or selected text.
  2. On the Design tab, in the Document Formatting group, for Paragraph Spacing, you can select No Paragraph Space. This will change the formatting of the Normal style and will consequently apply to all paragraphs in that style.
  3. Both of these quick-and-dirty changes affect only the current document. If you want to make a change that will affect all new documents, display the Styles pane (Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S) and the Manage Styles button in the bottom left corner. In the Manage Styles dialog, select the Set Defaults tab. Change the line spacing as desired and select the radio button for "New documents based on this template," then click OK.
  4. Alternatively, right-click in a Normal paragraph in your document, choose Paragraph, change the settings as desired, click Set As Default, choose the radio button for "All documents based on the Normal.dotm template," and click OK.

If you use option 3 or 4, be sure to say Yes if prompted to save the Normal template when you quit Word.
