Word objects still anchored to text when "Fix position on page" is selected!?

I have a document with a long text.

On some pages, in addition to the main text, I have text boxes.

I want the position of the text boxes to be fixed on the page, completely independently of the main text. I selected "square" text wrapping and "Fix position on page" for all text boxes. Nevertheless, they still have anchors associated with a particular paragraph of the main text, and the main text does not flow freely. Rather, awkward gaps appear in the text to enforce that a text box and its anchor end up on the same page.

How do I get the position of the text boxes to be actually independent of the main text, with no anchoring? All options that Word provides seem to indicated that I should get this behavior, but I don't.

Some additional information:
- My text boxes contain text and pictures.
- There's a glitch with the display of the anchor handles described above: Bizarrely, they are only visible while I change the size of the text boxes in question. As soon as I release the mouse button, they vanish. So I can't even click on them to change their position, but I know they are there because they are displayed when I change the size of the text box in question.

Thanks.
Any wrapped object, and this includes text boxes, must be anchored to a text paragraph. There is no way around this. If the wrapping is Square or Tight, text should be wrapping around the graphic. If it is Top and Bottom, it should still flow around a graphic whose position is set relative to the page. The contents of the text box must be formatted as In Line With Text (you can't wrap content inside a wrapped object), but the text box itself should have wrapping other than In Line With Text.

This is so frustrating. It goes entirely against what the program options make me believe. This is a significant issue that essentially makes it impossible to create a reasonable layout for a document with figures. I don't understand how Microsoft can let something like that happen.

Is there a way to move the anchor to the middle of a paragraph, at least? And what's up with the vanishing anchor symbol? I couldn't even move it if I wanted to, because the symbol is only visible while I resize the text box in question. It seems to correlate with having pictures inside the text box, which makes me think that this is simply a bug.

Anchor is set to a paragraph and not to certain words or sentence in a paragraph.

For eg: You have a paragraph about birds. You insert an image of birds.

You may not anchor the image to this paragraph so that when you add text to previous pages and the paragraph moves to a different page, the image also moves along with it.

At the same time, if you move the image to a different page, the anchored paragragh also moves.

If you lock the anchor, the graphic will move with the paragraph to which it is anchored. You can, in fact, anchor the graphic to a specific line or character or to a position relative to the first line of the paragraph. The graphic moves with the paragraph and not the other way around. You can also insert a graphic in a paragraph In Line With Text, so that it becomes part of the text flow of the paragraph.

But what Matthias is asking is to have a text box anchored to the page such that text will flow around it and it will stay on the same page without being anchored to a specific paragraph. This cannot be done. The position can be specified relative to the page, but the graphic will still move with the anchor paragraph (to the same position on the page where the anchor paragraph resides).

This is one of the reasons I've always disliked Word.  Some of its limitations will drive a person crazy.  If I can use Publisher, I will choose it every time.  Unfortunately I am required to use Word to create an electronic form, and I am having the same issues.  When Adobe brought out InDesign, it was so fabulous, use of other programs like Quark began to vanish.  While I don't want Word to go away, it really needs a good competitor. Features I liked have been taken away, features I long for, never appear.

Note that Word has always been different from page layout software.

What you can do is post specific suggestions for future releases here: http://word.uservoice.com/.

Then, Suzanne, with all due respect:  FIX THIS ISSUE!  I have been using Microsoft Word for >15 years now, and I am more lost and confused than ever.  That is no exaggeration.  I can't even move an object on the page without it destroying the formatting somewhere else in the document.

Almost everyone in the science community has moved over to LaTex because they can't make sense of Word.  It is really telling when scientists and engineers cannot grasp formatting in "common sense" program after so many years.

Someone at Microsoft, I am pleading: PLEASE MAKE WORD MAKE SENSE!  I'm not asking for which youtube video to watch, or what "help" section to read.  The platform is good.  Don't add a thing.  No more add-ons, or options.  Just work on what you have.

Now, I'm worried how you'll take this suggestion, but here goes:  Please, make formatting in Word Intuitive.

I say i'm worried because Microsoft seems to have their own ideas about what "intuitive" means (e.g. Windows 8 fiasco, and so, so many more).  So let me help define what it means to the greater public (i.e. your customers):  It means that when I make a picture larger, it does not move into the adjacent column or onto the next page, it simply GETS BIGGER.   Another example, when I insert a table, find the perfect position on the page, then lock its position in the top right corner of page 4, I want the position to LOCK IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF PAGE 4!!!!  Lock means LOCK!

Someone get these guys a dictionary.

Sorry to take his out on you Suzanne, I know it's not your fault, but I'm tired and angry, and it's been building for such a long time.
