Word 2013 splits words when wrapping text

Words in bulleted text are being split (e.g., the word "stones" in the following sentence):

I haven't noticed this problem in ordinary paragraphs.

This doesn't quite fit any other issues I've seen posted.

This is not normal behaviour and I am unable to reproduce it. Start by checking for orphan temporary files - http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm .  Repair Office from the Windows Control Panel > Uninstall a Program applet.

If that doesn't fix it, rename the normal template and reinstall the printer driver.

I made the changes/deletions that you suggest on your website; I haven't yet re-installed the printer driver. So far, the problem persists.

Additional info:

  • I'm using Office 365; I did a full "repair" from Programs and Features, to no avail;
  • The file with the problem started as an ODT file (Open Office 4), was opened with Word, then saved as DOCM (Macro-Enabled);
  • The problem text copies/pastes into Wordpad without the errors, but copies/pastes back into Word with the same errors (unless it's pasted as "unformatted text," which works without any apparent errors);
  • I used two macros in the document, after opening it in Word; An "Increase Indent" macro, and a "Decrease Indent" macro, which were previously created using the "Record Macro" feature in Word.

I'll re-install the printer drivers as soon as I can, then post an update.

Thanks for the help!

This usually indicates either a damaged font or a corrupted document. It's easier to check the font. Try applying a different font to see whether it makes a difference. If it doesn't, then you'll have to deal with the document. The article at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm describes several methods, not all of which are suitable for XML documents (.docx).

Given your further comments it appears that the problem relates to artefacts from the Open Office conversion (which was not mentioned in the original message).

Copying as unformatted text eliminates hidden formatting and so Word can handle it correctly. This means that Word is not the problem.

Can you post a section of the document displaying the problem somewhere e.g. dropbox or onedrive so that we may see if there is a simple solution?

Yeah, I'd forgotten that the document started in Open Office (oops).

I'll see about putting a piece of it on onedrive; I haven't used onedrive yet, so this will be my initiation to the thing. It make take me a day or two, I'll post when it's uploaded.

Thanks!

If I did everything correctly, here's a link to a file with a portion of the doc w/the problems:

There is no easy way to fix the document that I can find, but the problem will go away if you save the document as Word 97-2003 DOC format (and leave it in that format). The problem returns if you resave as DOCX. The problem undoubtedly relates to the conversion process used to convert to Word. Unless you are prepared to create styles and reformat the document, I think that would be your best option.

What I noticed is that the problem style has the language set to "(Asian) Chinese (PRC)." There seem to be no way to get rid of that language specification. If I try to specify English (US) nothing happens. If I try to specify Swedish, I get the following in the style description:

As you can tell, two languages are listed. This may or may not be relevant to the underlying problem.

I suspected that it is probably relevant. I couldn't find anything else that might be causing it, and like you I could see no way to remove that setting.
