Why do I get little squares in my ms word 2013 document

I just purchased Word 2013 yesterday, and I've noticed every time I use an apostrophe in a contraction or use quotation marks, word replaces them with tiny square boxes.

This suggests a problem with the font. Have you tried a different font?

With me, it don't replace it, but just adds the square in front of it..  I'm using Times New Roman, which I thought was the most common font.   The don't appear in the mss even if do the shift controll 8 option--they don't appear untill you print it.   But if onscreen, you move the curser over where they appear on the printed version the square appears in blue (highlite) , so I just delete it.  It takes time, but it's the only way I see so far to gt rid of them

Do the squares appear in Print Preview? If so, you can edit the document in Print Preview if you add the Print Preview Edit Mode command to your Quick Access Toolbar. When you are in that view, click on the Magnifier button to toggle it off, and then you will be able to edit in that view.
