Opening Word docx

Recently, whenever I open Word doc, docx on my computer, they open at 30% and I have to zoom. I don't know why this has happened and I can find no where to change a default setting. Of course if I open- zoom-and save I can open at 100%-but I have access to hundreds of documents and this is an annoyance. I'm using Office 2013, Windows 7 Enterprise. Any ideas?

I've read and reread your inquiry and I must admit to being a bit confused. Are you saying that opening a previous unopened or new document opens it at a 30% zoom level but if you open it, change the zoom level to 100%, save and close it then subsequently opening that document will open it at 100% zoom level while other documents and new documents continue to open at 30%?

Word is designed to remember the last zoom level used and to keep using that zoom level until a new zoom level is chosen. AFAIK, this is not stored on a document-by-document basis; only on an application wide basis.

Could you clarify?

If I was going to go on the assumption that some third-party software like anti-virus was interfering in saving (i.e. remembering) the last used zoom level then I would suggest opening Word with a right-click and choosing Run as administrator. Acknowledge the UAC warning and supply credentials if required. That should bypass any over-zealous security concerns the system is suffering. If you set the zoom level to 100% (or whatever you prefer) and close Word, the next time it opens it should be at that zoom level regardless of what new or existing document you are opening. If this solved the problem, then closer examination of what add-ons your system is using may be in order. There are other settings like Show Formatting Marks that are saved in the same application model fashion.

I tried your fix--right clicking on Word didn't have a run as administrator option-had to go to the WinWord.exe file to find that..... But it didn't help.

I have hundreds of Word Docs on my computer, both doc and docx. The extension doesn't matter. When I open the docs and even Save, they still open at 30%. I've tried looking at compatibility issues, inspect document. Not all docs do this--it seems that newer ones open at 100%.

But now I have another clue that might help......

I copied some files that open at 30% onto a flash drive. Logged in on the same computer as another user. The docs opened at 100% both directly from the flash drive and when I copied them to the desktop.

Does this mean it has something to do with my profile?

It does depend -- indirectly -- on your profile, in the sense that the culprit is most likely an add-in that loads into Word in your original profile but not in others.

In your original profile, try starting Word in safe mode by holding the Ctrl key while clicking its icon or its name in the Start menu. When a message box appears

Image

click Yes. That suppresses all add-ins and the (possibly customized) Normal template.

If documents open at 100% in safe mode, then either an add-in or -- less likely -- a macro in the Normal template is responsible. If there are no macros in the Normal template, start disabling or removing add-ins one at a time to find the cause.

If all else fails, you can download and install the SaveView2013.zip add-in from http://jay-freedman.info/. It contains macros that save the current zoom and view when a document is closed, and force the same zoom and view when it's reopened. A possible drawback is that it will change the file's Modified date, even if there are no other changes in the document.
