Well, you could just download the proofing tools Word is asking for, but an interim solution is to find and remove the German text in the document. Since this is happening in new blank documents, you'll probably (ultimately) have to make the correction in the Normal template, but first let's see if it works in a new document.

  1. Press Ctrl+H to open the Replace dialog.
  2. Select the Find tab.
  3. Click More>> to expand the dialog.
  4. Click Format, then Language...
  5. In the Find Language dialog, select "German (Austria)" and click OK.
  6. Click Find Next.

If Word doesn't find anything, then the message is bogus, but if it does find something, carefully examine what you're seeing. It may be that the language formatting is hidden in an unused header or footer. If that's the case, you'll see it displayed in a pane at the bottom of the window, and the location will be labeled. You may have to enable either "Different First Page" or "Different Odd and Even" and add pages to the document to access these locations. Alternatively, you may be able to edit the text in the results pane; just change the language to the default proofing language.
