Macros in Word 2013

I now have Word 2013, and customizing macros is not nearly as flexible as it was in my last Word, which I loved dearly (2003).

Is there any way to get some custom icons to attach to macros I create?  The choice of icons is so generic that it's impossible for me to find one that relates in any way to the macro I create.  In Word 2003, when you created a macro, you had the option to use or modify an existing icon, or create one from scratch.  The icon quality probably could have been less jagged looking, but you could make one that made sense for the assigned macro.

Does anyone out there know how to assign icons other than the generic assortment offered in Word 2013?

At present I don't think there's any good way to get custom icons for macros on the QAT (at least for macros you have some choice, which is more than is the case for the many Commands Not in the Ribbon that just display with a green ball). There are two workarounds that I know of:

  1. If you're willing to put in a little time learning to create custom Ribbon icons, you can have custom icons on the Ribbon. See http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tip_pages/customize_ribbon_main.html.
  2. If you still have a menu version of Word, you can design custom toolbar buttons and import them into Ribbon versions. See http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm. The disadvantage is that they will be two clicks away, under a QAT button for Custom Toolbars, but at least you can have them (I imported my customized buttons for character spacing and Line and Page Breaks settings--Page Break Before, Keep With Next, Keep Lines Together--plus a ToolsCalculate button and a button to print from a different printer).

Hi, Suzanne,

First let me apologize for the delay in getting back to you, and also thank you for your input.

I'm afraid I couldn't find the time to do anything but read the articles for which you provided a link, and it looks like I don't know when I can find the time to actually try the steps provided.  While I'm always up to take on a challenge, time seems to be really scarce lately.

But I did want to thank you for replying.

Sincerely,

Louise Celli
