Language Pack(s) Not Functioning For Spelling/Grammar Check in Word 2013

I use English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian language packs for MS Word 2013.  Some of the language packs are not functioning for spelling and grammar check (see picture).

Things I have already tried:

  • Reinstalling Office entirely
  • Reinstalling the language packs
  • Double checking the spelling/grammar settings within each language pack under Proofing Options
  • Everything that was listed in this post

I'm starting to wonder if the newer language packs simply aren't as polished as the older ones.  I never had these problems with Office 2007 language packs.

Hello,

Does the spell check works for English language?

You may go to File > Options > Language and check if the proofing is installed for the languages of your choice.

Provide us the detailed information about the issue which will help us to analyze and assist you in better way.

Also, as the screenshot is in the different language and if you’re comfortable in those language you may also post the query in the desired language forum.

To do so, select your language by clicking on the Globe picture at the bottom left hand side corner to post your question in the language of your choice.

Thank you.

The spell checker worked flawlessly for the English language and French, but not for Spanish (Puerto Rico) or Portuguese (Brazil).

Yes, the proofing is installed for the languages of my choice. That's how I'm even able to test this in the first place.  If you noticed on the screenshot I included, the spelling/grammar check function works fine on one sentence, and only partially on the following one.

Actually, I have downloaded and installed the Language Pack for Italian 2013 to go with my new 2013 Office on my new computer. My old computer, running Office Word 2007 with the Italian language pack for 2007 worked beautifully. Now that old computer is crashing on and off, and I had to buy a new computer with a new Office and a new language pack. The new 2013 Italian language pack does not check grammar, although it catches spelling mistakes. Anyone who speaks Italian knows that spelling is not an issue (Italian spelling is much easier than English); however, the grammar checker is not working AT ALL and it is needed. I took some screen shots of the way the grammar checker worked in 2007 and have been getting help from Microsoft technicians who can't seem to fix this issue. So far, I have clocked in 15 hours with Microsoft technicians and the case has been escalated three times. Currently, the technician is watching me as I type this in. I cannot believe that the excellent features of the Italian Language Pack 2007 (grammar checker) have been dropped from the 2013 version. How can they call the Italian Language Pack 2013 a grammar checker if no grammar checking is going on? I do not believe this is intentional. The 2007 grammar checker was a good service (although not perfect--no electronic grammar checker is). It was much better than the English grammar checker. So what happened to it? I cannot believe that Microsoft wants to intentionally drop this valuable feature.

I'm having the same issue with Portuguese (Brazil) - if I loaded the language pack and then noticed that the proofing package was not loaded. I then went to the suggested MS site and loaded the proofing package. I rebooted, restarted word and even though the install completed successfully, no proofing package is indicated as installed. Spanish installed fine and works ..... any suggestions?

Make sure that you installed the correct version of the proofing tools. You need 32 bit proofing tools for 32 bit Office (even if you are running 64 bit Windows).

After  a month and about 30 hours with Microsoft Tech support (following all the guidelines above and MORE), I and the tech support agents discovered that the Language Pack 2013 for Italian checks only spelling, which is virtually useless in Italian (unlike English, where grammar checkers are not needed but spelling checkers are). Everyone on the Italian language blog is having the same problem. Microsoft Tech told me to get a 2010 Word version and install the 2010 Italian language pack. That works. 2013 does not. I checked the 2016 version in a Microsoft store. That does not work, either. If this is a trend (with other languages as well), everyone needs to notify Microsoft so that they will consider it a serious issue and correct it.

Thanks for the follow-up.

The grammar checker in Office 2016 has limited capabilities for all languages, but a new and improved version will be released as part of a regular Office update. Perhaps the improvement also applies to Italian.
