Hebrew font shows in document and printing as blank squares

New computer, Windows 8.1, Word 2013.  I'm trying to work on a customer's document that has some Hebrew in it.  I have the font that came with Word (David), and another font I've downloaded and installed.  They all show up as squares.  Here's what I've done so far:

  • Tried more than one font--none work.
  • Changed the printer definition I was working with to several others on my computer--none work (my printer always printed just fine in Windows 7/Word 2010.
  • Updated the firmware in my printer (the driver was already up-to-date).
  • Searched for updates/patches to Word 2013--it said I was up to date.
  • Loaded the Hebrew language for Word 2013--keyboard and language/spell-check.
  • Rebooted the computer to see if any of the changes would kick in.
  • Talked to a support person who let me know that even though I've had this software less than 30 days, I don't qualify for support for this problem.
  • Googled for hours and got a "there was trouble signing you in, try again later" error message for Microsoft's support area when using Chrome.

Okay, so those last two points were actually whining--it's been a long day.

Any suggestions?  This all worked so beautifully with my old setup.

When you click in the Hebrew in the document, what font is shown in the Font box in the Font group on the Home tab? This would be the font you need to install (though Word should be substituting a font that will work).

Hi, Suzanne!  I was writing to tell you that DavidD is in the box on the document that was sent to me, but when I've tried changing it to different Hebrew or English fonts, all I get are different sizes of squares.  These are the fonts I've selected that show in the font box:  Davka David,  David,  Miriam,  Times New Roman,  Arial.

However, I went back and reloaded DavidD and installed it, since it wasn't showing up in the fonts folder, and now it's working!  And so is "David" all of a sudden.  The other fonts still do not show any Hebrew characters.  So my immediate problem is solved, even though the other fonts are not acting as they should.  If you have any ideas on what's going on with them, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

No clues, but I'm glad you got it at least semi-working. The whole subject of non-Latin fonts and especially of right-to-left languages is pretty much a mystery to me!
