find and replace variation

I have an index with entries like

alligators, 121, 145

cats, 21, 56

dogs, 13, 44, 97

I do not know why some of the index lines are in bold

I can't change the styles of the entries in the text because there are over 13,000 of them.

I want to unbold the word part of the entry but not the page numbers, so I would get this:

alligators, 121, 145

cats, 21, 56

dogs, 13, 44, 97

There must be an easy way to do this but I have not found it.

If you want to have a bold page number in the index, the proper way to do it is to add the \b switch to the index entry. If you're using the Mark Index Entry dialog to insert the XE field, you check the box for "Bold."

To rectify the problem now, display Hidden text so that your XE fields are displayed. Then run a Replace as follows:

Press Ctrl+H to open the Replace dialog.
Click More>> to expand the dialog.
In the "Find what" box, type: ^d XE
In the "Replace with" box, type: ^&
With the insertion point in the "Replace with" box, click Format | Style and choose "Default Paragraph Font." Click OK.
Click Replace All.

This will remove any manually applied formatting from your index entries. You will now need to seek out the entries for which you want bolded page numbers and add the \b switch to the XE field code.
