Why would you want to?

Basically you open the doc then use Save As and select the appropriate format

I also cannot see why you would want to do this. There may be a number of formatting issues produced as a result. Word 2013 can open the old documents.

However if you insist then the following add-in will do it: http://www.gmayor.com/Works_Batch_Converter.htm

I to will ask what your exact reasons are for wanting to covert doc to docx?  Are you looking to use new DOCX only featuresor something else?

Do you want to convert files one at a time or in batches (many at a time)?

The one at a time process is:

  1. open the DOC file
  2. File menu > Info command > Convert button

You now have a copy of the file in both formats.

I think you'll find that the convert button removes the DOC files!

Right you are.

When I tried it yesterday, I hadn't closed all of the Word 2013 sessions.  When I retried it today, and closed everything, I found that the DOC was gone.  Not the way I would prefer it to work.

Save As does preserve the .doc and creates a new .docx, though.

My batch converter (updated as a consequence of this thread) gives you the choice of keeping (the default) or discarding the original documents. http://www.gmayor.com/Works_Batch_Converter.htm

Yea, but I am new at this too.  What is .docx?  And why are my old documents being converted to it automatically?  If it is not useful, how do I stop it?

DOC (and XLS ...) has not been used since Microsoft Office 2003

many freebie/fake/phony 'office'-type applications on the internet still produce DOC and XLS files

unfortunately they often yield corrupted formatting when used with Microsoft® Office applications

including when stored on Microsoft OneDrive and used with Office Online

Why would you want to?

one reason is that Word Online cannot edit DOC – must be DOCX

same for Excel Online – not XLS but XLSX
