Column break creates page break

I am pretty familiar with this feature, but every once in a while when I hit column break it creates a new page.  The page set up is set for continuous.  Nothing in any of the drop down menus is set to create a new page, so why do I get a page break when I want a column break?!!! Beyond annoying, especially when I cannot fix it.

The article Section break causes an unexpected page break in Word” explains this problem in earlier versions, but I thought that the behavior had been changed in recent versions (in which footnotes appear in columns). Is the document in question perhaps in Word 97-2003 format?

Suzanne's suggestion is probably more likely, especially if the document is in fact in Word 97–2003 (*.doc) format.

However, if the continuous section only barely fits on a single page, then the paragraph mark following the section break may add a page, simply because there isn't enough space for the paragraph mark below the section break. In such a case, you can format the "extra" paragraph mark as hidden text (and/or set its Line Spacing to "Exactly" 1 point, make sure that Spacing Before/After is zero and that the font size is 1 point).
