Change Word 2013 custom template menu to list not icons

Our company has quite a lot of custom templates which incorporate macros etc.  In Word 2003 we could change how the template menu appeared so that a briefer "List" style of menu appeared instead of the "Icon" style of menu.  This made it easier to select the required template from the variety available.

Now in Word 2013 its even worse the Icons are huge and you have to peddle down through 2 drag bars to get to what you want to find - time consuming and annoying.

Is there any way to change the Template menu so that "List" style is available (i.e. alphabetically listed by name rather than a huge icon type picture of what the template looks like).

NB  You do not offer the option below of choosing Office on Windows 9 - that is our system.

Modify the Quick Access Toolbar by adding the "New Document or Template ..." item from the "Commands Not in Ribbon" group.  That causes the "File New Dialog Classic" from earlier versions of Word to be displayed.

The new Microsoft Office 2013 version comes with a new Start Screen feature which is similar to Windows 8 Start . Office 2013 Start Screen shows tiles of some predefined templates which help users in creating new documents quickly and easily.

Thank you for the tip, I have exactly the same problem as BevLongstaff.

But it's still not working as it should.

All our company templates are categorized in different folders, which appears as tabs in the "File New Dialog Classic", and that's fine, but Microsoft also adds quite a lot of tabs (from templates on Microsoft.com?) which means I have to browse via the "More.." tab to see all my tabs.

I just want my templates in this dialog, nothing more, nothing less.

(Or just one ("General") tab from MS - I think we had this in Windows XP/Word2007.)

All the tabs on the first row (sorry it's in Swedish) are from Microsoft - and I haven't set any path to that, as far as I know.

The names of the first row tabs are (appr translation): General, Access-data, Othe documents, Letters, Fax, CVs, Reports.

So, is there any more tweaks I colud do?

Appreciate this tip. Makes the programs launch much faster also. I also like the tip above, customizing the Quick Access bar.

Hi Mårten,

The Microsoft Templates are located in the following folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033

You could try moving them to another location and see if that causes the tabs to disappear.

Hope this helps,

If Word 2013 is like previous versions, it may not suffice to move or delete the built-in templates because they seem to be regenerated from the executable. My recollection is that you have to actually uninstall them (run a Change install and uncheck that item).
