After Windows updates unable to open Microsoft Office applications, Uninstalled/Reinstalled Microsoft Office, Word wont open says Repair Now. Any advice please?

Hi

After recent windows updates I was unable to open Word, Excel, Powerpoint.  My operating system is Microsoft 8.1 and I have Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013.

I am aware a lot of others have had this problem since the Windows Update and followed the advice on the forums to uninstall/reinstall office.  I tried this but I now cannot open Word I keep getting dialog box repair now, when I click it, nothing happens.

Can anyone advice what to do next? Also does anyone know how an email contact address to contact Microsoft to complain?

Thanks for your help in advance,

If that does help, remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

saving it to your computer and then running it.

Then reinstall Office by logging into
www.office.com/myaccount with your registered email address and click Install Office.

Thank you for your advice, however, I have followed your instructions.  I applied all updates used your link downloading the fixit to uninstall then reinstalled.

This time when I clicked Word to open it returned a dialog box to open in Safe mode I clicked Yes then received the same dialog box Repair word.  Clicked again - nothing happened, hence I am hoping you can suggest something else.

A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

For the error message Error: "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product." See:

Try to run word in safe mode by typing winword/safe.

If th
at
does not helpthen, in the search box type winword --> Word 2013 will be displayed --> right click on it --> Select Properties --> Go to the compatibility tab --> Check to see if there is a check mark next to compatibilty mode.

If it is checked then uncheck it and then uncheck the option of Run as Administrator if its checked.

Now run the word

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013.  See:

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver
NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2013_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

http://www.dilloway.co.uk/there-was-a-problem-sending-the-command.html

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

If you have a Canon 8350 printer, try using the Canon MF8000 UFRI LT XPS driver as detail in the post by Riad Amstha on April 14 in the thread at:

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Try this simple steps...

If you are using Windows 7, right click on any Office icon (I prefer that you right click on the one which is having an issue)  then choose troubleshoot compatibility.

Choose "My problem is not listed" > Next > Vista Sp2 or anything until it works.

Hi Doug,

Thanks so much for such a comprehensive list of options.

As above, I had tried the "Why can't I start my Office 2013" article's options.

The error message I'm getting reads 'We're sorry but word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?" with options reading "Repair now, Help, Close" (I've tried all 3.)

I've now attempted the advice on repairing office 2013\365 you provided above. Unfortunately, an error message came up the first time saying this is not working and Microsoft would notify me if it could be corrected. However, upon re-trying, it will no longer offer the options stated in the article.

The install woes article didn't offer any advice other than for installation and, although increasingly true to my personal experience, may not be appropriate reading as it presents a very disgruntled view of the lack of attempts of Microsoft to correct their system's error.

The knowledge base article “Office 2013 applications crash on launch at the splash screen” doesn't refer to the error message I'm receiving.

As explained above, I had tried all options described on the knowledge-base article Something went wrong and we can't sign you in right now” previously. This was also aimed at installation, not repair.

I've now tried winword\safe, which unfortunately, was also unsuccessful. The alternative option of typing winword in the search box followed by right clicking, didn't offer 'Properties' option on the drop-down.

I also tried switching off bluetooth, as you suggested on the "Microsoft Word 2013 has stopped working" thread.

Abbyy Finereader, Fun Tools, Toshiba Book Reader or Acrobat PDF Maker aren't installed on my computer.

Apologies here - I'm not familiar with dealing with hardware, so am less familiar with this. How do you access the drive?

Fast Picture Viewer isn't installed and it's not linked to a printer.

Very much look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks very much,

Kirstin

If that is the case, I recommend that you visit Microsoft Answer Desk so that they can remotely access your computer and fix it for you. You can go to Answerdesk.microsoft.com
