When indents change unexpectedly in a numbered or bulleted list, you have to verify that they have been set up properly. Click in the first level 1 item of the list and then click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List (although the "new"
part is misleading). Adjust the settings in the "Position" area as desired. You may have to click the More button to see all options.
The safest approach (but it may also be a bit time-consuming) is to carefully recreate numbering, making sure that it is attached to paragraph styles (one for each numbering level). See the article at
http://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.
Note that the article makes use of the built-in headings, but you should use other, nonheading styles for your list (unless you are creating numbered headings of course).
