why do my word documents now have paragraph signs and dots between words and double dots between sentences, etc.

I received a Word document from my daughter via email and the document had Paragraph symbols, dots between words, double dots between sentences, etc.  I tried to save it in a different format and low and behold now all of my personal documents are changed to be exactly like this version sent by my daughter.  I do not want to write a WORD document with all of this mess on it.  I want my old format back and my personal WORD documents back.  I have WORD 2010.  Could anyone please help?  Thanks.

Answer

The documents are unchanged, it is merely a display setting. Word is displaying non-printing characters.

Click the Show/Hide ¶ button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab of the ribbon, or press Ctrl+Shift+8 to toggle the display of non-printing characters.

To add to what Hans has said, see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/NonprintChars.htm for an explanation of all these formatting marks and why you might sometimes want to be able to see them.
