Where can I insert the sequencing Latin numbers in MS Word 2010?

Hi,

I want to insert such numbers.

I
II
III
IV
V
VI
VII
VIII
IX
X
XI
XII
XIII
XIV
XV
XVI
XVII
XVIII
XIX
XX
XXI
XXII

I couldn't find any of those numbers above when I clicked on  insert 'symbol' on the toolbar.

Should I only use the letters on Keyboard, such as 'I', V, X' and so on.  I don't think so since sequencing Latin numbers are different?

If you want autonumbered paragraphs that use roman numerals, you can select I, II, III or i, ii, iii as the "number style." That's the only way to get autonumbering using roman numerals, and the numbers will use the standard alphabetic characters (I, V, X, etc.).

The Arial Unicode MS font does have compound roman numeral characters in the Number Forms character subset at U2160 to U2182.

They are not in the symbols. They are numbers, not symbols. If they were symbols, Word would not sequence them anyway.

If you are looking for automatically sequencing numbers, take a look at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

Another option would be use of a Sequence field with a \* Roman switch.

If you are not looking for lists or sequentially numbering but simply the numbers, the Quote field with a \* Roman switch will give you what you want.

{ Quote "53" \* Roman } gives a result displayed of "LIII."

Frankly typing them is easier, but any of these methods will give you a valid Roman numeral.

Note that the field delimiter braces {} cannot be typed, they must be inserted by Word. Note also that there are two switches available:

  • \* Roman - all caps: LIII
  • \* roman - lower case: liii
