Turn off unwanted features in Word 2010

When I type (a) Some text... and press return Word drops and INDENTS a line and adds (b) because it assumes I am doing a lettered list!  I am quite capable of selecting a numbered List or lettered list from the appropriate ribbon.  Also when I type (c) it changes it to a copyright symbol!  I am quite capable of selecting a copyright symbol or Euro or anything else when I want them.

I have tried looking on Options/Advanced and every where I can to turn off as much as I can where Word tries to help me!  Can anyone help me so i can turn off these unwanted in my case features.

In effect I prefer Word to be more like an advanced typewriter where I choose what I want to do and not find it making decisions/guesses on my behalf!

Any help gratefully received.

Graham
You need to go to Options>Proofing>AutoCorrect Options>AutoFormat As You Type and uncheck the box for "Automatic Bulleted Lists"
Hope this helps,

To add to what Doug has said, while you are in AutoFormat As You Type, you'll probably find lots of other options to disable. Among the most troublesome are automatic border lines and "Define styles based on your formatting," which translates to "Apply styles that have formatting that resembles the formatting you've applied directly" (which can result in having miscellaneous heading styles--or even Header or Footer--sprinkled throughout your document).

For the copyright symbol issue you can use the AutoCorrect tab and disable "Replace text as you type" to disable en masse, or delete individual offending entries.

Yes, Word does a lot of automation, trying to second guess you.

As well as the suggestions Doug and Suzanne made, when one of these "autocorrect" things happen you can also immediately use <CTL><Z> to undo the change.
